Burke family from Clonakilty ?
« on: Thursday 28 August 08 19:51 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone,
I am trying to put together our family tree!!

I cannot find the birth for my grandfather in the English register, although he lived and died in Liverpool England. Since talking to an elderly relative(82yrs) I have learned that he may well have been born in Ireland, and also that the family came from Cork.
His name was William Burke and his father was Peter Joseph Burke and I have no idea where to start to try to find him!!!

The relative I spoke to believes that Peter Burke my gt grandfather had 2 brothers and all went to school and grew up with Michael Collins the irish leader.

As Michael Collins was born in Clonakilty I am assuming they were also born there.
Would be most grateful for any help or info anyone could provide

My grandfather William Burke b1900 married in England 1924,and died in Liverpool 1938.
His father Peter Joseph Burke d1941 Liverpool England.
I do not know his date of birth but do know he was born in Ireland
Any advice would be most appreciated.

Normally it would be fairly simple to order your grandfather's birth certificate which would give an exact date and place of birth as well as mother's name. However, since you don't have an exact birthdate (and perhaps year '1900' is based on his age at death?) and are not 100% sure of place it might not be that easy.
Working back to the next generation- roughly when would Peter Joseph Burke have been born? Have you found him in the 1901 census in England? 1901 Irish census will eventually be put online (National Archives, Dublin). Some, not all, Irish births 1864-c1882 are on IGI (www.familysearch.org) so you could have a look there to see if you can spot Peter Joseph/
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

There is a birth for Peter Joseph Burke 31st May 1870 Ireland -parents, Peter Burke and Anne Butler,
in Family Search.
This would nearly tie in with age 72 at death in 1938.
It might be worth an ask at Irish GRO. :-\

Have you got any of the death and marriage certs for those you mentioned? Acc. to FindMyPast both deaths were in Liverpool North.
There is a marriage for William in 1924 at West Derby Reg. Office to Annie Maddock. Is this the right one?
I can't find Peter in 1901 English census.

Hi Kooky,
Thank you for your reply.
I have the marriage cert for William Burke and Annie Maddock.
The marriage took place 18th October 1924 in the Roman Catholic Church of the Blessed Sacrament, Fazakerly, Liverpool. It states William's father as Peter Burke and Annie's Father as Joseph Maddock.
I cannot find any of the Burkes in the 1901 census, and I have estimated Williams birth from the marr cert because it says he was 24 yrs  the time of marriage. I will take a look at family search for the Peter you have mentioned but still I have no way of knowing this is the Peter I am looking for as I don't know his wife's name!
It was William that died in 1938 and Peter in 1941,( although I hav'nt verified that yet) my elderly uncle gave me that info!  Thanks again for your interest and reply. Annie.

If you were to obtain the death certs. you would see the address, their occupation and maybe an interesting informant - family member for instance.
You can send to GRO at Southport for the certs. They cost £7 each with a full reference no.

These are:- Peter Burke dec age 72 June 1941, Liverpool North -8b 581
and William burke dec. age 37 March 1938, Liverpool North - 8b 479.

[ I was interested in your post because my parents lived in West Cork for some time in the 60s and 70s and their nearest big shopping town was Clonakilty.]

Hi Kooky,
Thankyou for taking the time to look up the deaths for me, and I will order the deaths certs now while I'm online.
I have just been into Manchester to join the family history society!!
I will let you know any further developements when I get the certs.
Annie.
(I would put in a smiley face to thank you, but I don't know how to!)
