NOT MUCH TO GO ON
« on: Friday 28 January 05 05:39 GMT (UK) »
Charles Hickox - possibly a convict on the Ship Hooghley Leaving from Southhampton arriving Australia 1834. Charles ticket of fredom dated 2 Jun 1841.

I don't know anything else about this person except if it is the same person I am looking for he married Ann Robinson. I don't know anything about her either.

They had a daughter Emma born Ulludulla NSW Australia 1849 who married John Manners born 1842 Greenock Scotland. They are my great great grandparents.

Emma has three brothers Edward b 1851, Charles b1853 and George b1858.

I know this is a long shot but I have to start somewhere.
Because the Hooghley left Southhampton I'm starting my guess as the where Charles Hickox broke the law.

Please Please Anybody???? :-*

It not a common name.
Before I go any further, do you have his shipping records they often said where people came from and If a convict will list his crime and where committed.

In the 1871 census there are 50 Hickox's listed.  Removing wives there are 40
1 Kent
1 Leicestershire
7 Sussex
6 Worcestershire
6 Hampshire
5 Herefordshire
6 Middlesex
9 Surrey
This may help you limit the area in which they lived in England

On his death certificate does it list where he was born, it may also give his parents names.

Hickox is not a common name but remember many ordinary people were unable to read or write so you may have to look at variants eg. Hitchcock.
Did he marry his wife in England or Australia?  Have you tried the IGI?
I think convicts often walked miles to their ships prior to transportation but Robyn's research from the 1871 census shows that it is likely he came from southern England.
It might be worth looking at  the A2A website
http://www.a2a.org.uk/
and also the proceedings of the Old Bailey website

good luck

Went to Claim a Convict sight and fantastic I got a reply and found the family I have been searching for though with some discrepancies, which we will sort out together. So thanks to all those who replied. RootsChat has turned out to be the best board so far.
