Albany Place, Falmouth
« on: Sunday 31 August 08 15:32 BST (UK) »
Does anybody know the reason why the originally named Bathurst St., became Albany Place. Sometime after our house was built in 1898, the street was renamed? I have a letter from a previous owner (1950's) asking the same question, to which the local council had no record. I would be interested in any theories. Regards, Geoff.

Hi Geoff
Its very unusual for councils to re-name streets with a completely different name, especially After a house was built. The councils planning department should have records of this change. If you have an archives or a reference library where you live they will  have old street maps for years you want pre 1898 then a later one. They librarians might throw some light on your mystery:)

Thanks Celia, It would appear that the council were approached about this question some years ago, but had no answer. However, I think it's worth another try as hopefully all their records may have been transcribed onto a database? Who knows. Regards, Geoff.

Albany Place was on the 1891 census, only a few houses though RG12/1835 folio 66 pgs 36 - 37. Is that the same one?  I haven't looked for Bathurst Street but noticed Albany Place because my great great grandmother's sister just happened to live in Albany Street on her 1891 & 1901 census entries.

Hello,
Thanks for the 1891C information, I will look that up asap.
The reason for there only being a few houses in 1891 was because our house wasn't built until 1898. I looked on the 1901C and found the occupier of our house, but didn't think to look any earlier. It would seem that Albany Place may always have been Albany Place! The confusion seems to have originated on the house deeds, where it clearly states Bathurst St., this may have just been an error at the time, (although a somewhat big error!). Never mind.
Thanks again, Geoff.
