Hi

Apologies.  I'm sure this will have been asked before, but I haven't found it.

Can anyone tell me please, if there are the same kind of bmd records in Belgiem as for Britain?

Best wishes

There are civil records from 1795, church records before that  (and actually they tend to give more info than the British ones do), but no national indexes. Ideally you would know the town in Belgium where your family came from.

http://belgium.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ has some example scans/translations of civil records so you can see what sort of information is included.

Hi Jorose

Thank you that's a very detailed site.

I will definitely have to return in the morning.  It showed how little I know about Belgium, and where a couple of problems are coming from!

Study of maps required!

Sounds promising once I've done my homework!

Best wishes

Hi

Thank you Berlin Bob

And I should just add an acolade:

Thanks to a pm frrom a wonderful Roots chatter, I now have a death certificate which givews details not only of where and when he died but also his birth in Lancashire England, where, names of parents and date!

We knew where to look, though we weren't sure for certain that he died there or else where on the continent,  and she wrote to the local authorities.  theyndid tell us before we committed to the certificate though, that there wasd a death  registered for him there.

It wasn't in English of course, but that's part of the fun!

Thank you again Rootschat and especially my friend in Belgium!

Best wishes all.

Emms

I also have phot's of where he was.
