1841 Look-up please, DAVIES.
« on: Tuesday 02 September 08 18:25 BST (UK) »

Please would some kind soul do a Look-up on the 1841 Census for me please?

Its for my G/Grandmother, Margaret DAVIES, born Aberavon, 1836/7

I've managed to lose a file after my PC blew up:-(

I have a note saying:

HO107/1421/1 Folio 10 Page 13

However, my Ancestry sub has now expired...& I can't check it out:-(

Margaret married my G/Grandfather Evan Rees, & on the 1881 Census for Wales, they are living at 18 Welcome Street, Swansea. (Now one of the aisles in 'Asda's':-)

Cheers, Romilly.

Many thanks Cas,

Yes, I think that must be the right one. (The 'Navigator' rings a bell).

I wonder if 'navigator' was another word for 'sailor', - or if it was more specialised?

Romilly.

Only one I could find in Aberavon.  Your ref was blank.

Not sure what a 'navigator' is, but it seems likley related to the sea around this timeframe

Best wishes

Hi Cas and Romilly,

I would think that "Navigator" in this case is the full word for Navvy, derived from "inland navigators" the people who built the canal system. The term was then taken over by the men who built the railway system.

If I remember rightly "Navigator", as a job title, was mostly used by the RN and not by the MN. Though I stand to be corrected.....

Regards,
Lee.

Thanks for the imput Lee,

I will have a search through the RN records on the NA Site...& see if I can find any trace of John Davies in this timescale.

Cheers, Romilly.
