Quarry accident - 1835 - Uzzell
« on: Thursday 04 September 08 12:37 BST (UK) »
Hi, can anybody help, according to information from the family, my grt-grt-grt grandfather John Uzzell died in a quarry accident in 1835. I know he was buried 27th Dec 1835 in Poole Keynes, so presumably he died a short while prior to that and in the area.
I believe there is a note in the parish register re the accident but don't know what it says as I have not been able to check that.
I'm not sure if there are coroner's records or newspaper reports for the period as I have been told that there might be by one person and that there isn't by another. I wonder if anybody out there can confirm either way. Also if anybody is looking through Poole Keynes burials and finds that there is a note re the accident I would appreciate knowing what it actually said. Many thanks

Trouble,

Parloc a free parish locator programme - Google for it - gives Poole Keynes as being in Wiltshire not GLS.

Perhaps somebody in the Moonrakers can help you.

Regards

Chas

P.S. I searched but found no inquest report on a Uzzell having a "melancholy accident" (as they were often called) in any quarry given in the Gloucester Journal in 1835.

Hi Chas, thanks for that, will look it up.
Poole Keynes, Somerford Keynes and Kemble are on the border Wilts and Gls.
I know that between 1837 and 1897 they were under Wilts but believe the rest of the time they were Gls.
regards

Steve

Hi,
In my researching of the UZZELL family I did find that John UZZELL died in a quarry accident and is shown in the Parish Register.
I happen to be researching in Wiltshire RO when I got you enquiry and they say that no Coroners reports/inquests survive for that area/years.
If I find anymore I'll contact you.

He's my ancestor too, and in the burial record there is a note next to his entry saying 'Killed accidentally in a stone quarry - Coroner'.
