I can confirm that there was a "County Lunatic Asylum" at Bicton, Shrewsbury. All BMD at this place come under the Atcham registration district.

I happen to know as I have 2 children in a family tree registered in Atcham but detailed as being born at the asylum (this was in 1890 and 1894). I'm not entirely sure why the mother was there in the first place! She had 3 earlier children outside of the asylum, and died in 1903. Her husband remarried.

Regards.

Hello Masgras
Thankyou for your comments.
Confirming that there was an asylum whose BMDs were registered at Atcham does add weight to my earlier suspisions that this is where my relation was. As soon as her death cert arrives , I will hopefully be able to confirm this.

Many thanks
Sharon

I should mention that Bicton is NW of Shrewsbury, while Atcham village is east of the town. This link:
http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/bound_map_page.jsp?first=true&u_id=10055246&c_id=10001043
shows that Atcham RD basically encircled Shrewsbury town's own RD, accounting for this apparent anomaly, so Bicton's inmates would be Atcham.

Regards,
Mark
