« on: Friday 05 September 08 00:39 BST (UK) »
I have been looking at a Census record of Charles Edwards b 1838 , Mathern(e) , Monmouthshire in 1841
HO107/746/3. District7. Folio7.

I can see Charles 3
                Ellenor (?) 10
                Thomas (?) Ag Lab

but there are 2 other I am unsure about:
-Looks like Mary 70 ??????/Head??
And on the previous page:
- Sarah?? (female) 40

Can anyone help please?

Mary Edwards is in a separate household, so may or may not be related to the others - she is shown as being 'independent' in the occupation column.

The first name of the woman who is last on the previous page looks to be something like "Aneh"  ???  It definitely starts with an A.

Cheers

Hi Indigogirl, Is it possible to put a scan of the part of the enumerator's writing here so we can see what it's all about? I don't have access to the recor so can't make a comment without seeing the bit in question.

Hi Prue, thanks.

How can you be sure Mary is a different household? I know she's on the previous page but I couldn't see anything that separates them as the address is given as Matherne for all.

Can someone just clarify that I'm not breaching copyright before I scan the page in please?

I think the rule is that you must not scan in the whole page  but just the bit with which you are having difficulty deciphering.
Someone else may have more knowledge on this that I have.

It may need you to do two separate postings... one of each of the bits of the pages under discussion.

Hi Indigogirl  :)

Mary is actually on the same page, underneath the entry for Edward etc.  I've posted a clipping of the page below.  You can see there are two little diagonal lines on the lines above and below, and to the left, of Mary's name - this indicates she is a separate household.

I've also posted a clipping of the previous page, showing the other Edwards person as the last entry on the page.  I included a few others for handwriting comparisons (you can see the first letter matches that of Abraham above).

Re. copyright - it's OK to post little bits and pieces for purposes like this, but you can't post a whole page  :)

Cheers

Oh thanks for doing that Prue - thats a big help.

To clarify: The first Edwards on separate page with the A name is part of the same household as Thomas, Ellenor and Charles?
and
Mary age 70 is a separate household

(i didn't know that about the slashed lines either)

Underneath "ind" is says "lodger" I think. So - could she be a separate household ie Grandmother in the same property do you think?

No worries  :D

It looks like the one female on the previous page, and then Edward, Ellenor and Charles, are in one household, and Mary is in another.  The fact that it has "Lodger" and it's then crossed out and "Ind[ependent]" written in instead, indicates to me that she was a relative and was living with the others in the family, perhaps in her own room/s, and was of independent means.

Hope that helps  :)
