Number ONE rule in family history;

Never Assume Anything!

I believe Carol found your Robert - did the dates indicate he could be a son of this George?
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Hi Sonia

Popped in from the other topic!
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,330994.0.html

One thing bothers me here...actually a couple of things....

1) Your Grandad is  b 1923, the last born child of Jesse (1881-1942, m 1907). Is that right?
Your Grandad says he used to call the much sought-after Robert, who was alive in the 1970's,  "Uncle Bob ' and that Mabel, Grandad's eldest sibling visited this "Uncle Bob" around 1948?

And it is asserted above that this Robert is the son of Jesse's eldest sibling, George b 1872.
Which would make Grandad b 1923 and Robert b ????, 1st cousins. I wouldn't have thought the realtionship convoluted enough, or far enough apart in years, to warrant Grandad calling Robert "Uncle"....but could be wrong about that......

Or is it that Grandad talked about Uncle Bill, (George William b 1886) and Mabel visited him in 1948? And Uncle Bill had a son, Bob?

2)
1881 Census for the BENTLEY's - Jesse is there age 3mths.
The Eldest child there is George 8, b abt 1872 Baildon.

1891 Census for the BENTLEY's - George b 1872 not there (now would be abt 18?). But a new child, George William age 5, b abt 1886 has appeared. This George William is also present in 1901, age 15.  Yes there are documented instances of English families giving two living children the same first name.  But it was rare and relatively speaking, it was  far more common for parents who, when a child died young , gave their next born child of  the same gender the same name as the one who died. It happened a lot in Scotland, and to a lesser extent, in England.

I really don't think George b 1872 lived.  Is it not more possible he died and this may be his death registration:
George BENTLEY age 13, Sep Qtr 1885, Wharfedale

And after all that - I have just  found:
George William BENTLEY b 1886 - Jesse's younger brother., is definitely, the one who married Laura.
Sep Qtr 1907, N. Brierley - George William BENTLEY and Laura Elizabeth McCLEARNS

George William age 32, Baildon, enlisted to Army Reserves 1915, and was re-mobilized in WW1 in 1918. . His service record names his wife as above and has particulars of their 1907 marriage and - names 2 children:
William b 1907 Windmill?
Frederick A(lexander?) b 1911 Baildon

If they GW and Laura had a Robert, then it seems like it was after 1918 - or between 1915-1919, so again close to the age of your Grandad b 1923 who surely to goodness would not be calling such a Robert, "Uncle".....

I shall PM you with details.
There is an address for GW. Maybe Grandad will recognise some of the information (address' etc)....

Cheers

Hi All

I think........We need to be very careful here - we are getting to be dealing with people who are living, and who may have no wish to find their names and  close personal details on-line.....including Grandad I'm afraid ,if he hasn't explicitly given permission to have his name, age publicly available like this. And given the apparent propensity for the BENTLEY's  living to good old-age, we need to be especially careful.

Mabel went to visit them at 12 sandals road, baildon, shipley

The BENTLEY in question is listed in the BT phone book online at that exact address.

oh i forgot that they might still be living at Baildon address - im sorry everyone, i will be more careful in future.

I just wanted to try and find the Robert - with this topic i am condensing it into the other forum as it the Bentley tree im looking into now,not just the Robert - so i will change it to completed again and maybe someone can move it to the completed section so it will get ignored.

Thank you for your advice Ambly i am not 100% sure which Robert he is and who the living one is a son of etc, but i am going to write to him and explain who i am and what i am doing, i am sure they will help me. If not then i will go back to the drawing board!

Ok  - well the BENTLEY thread is already underway on a nother page:

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who helped me with all of this family tree.

Since this thread I found Grandads living New Zealand relatives and his Nephew Alexander D who is Mabels son that we spoke of in this thread has been over to visit.

Unfortunately my Grandad passed away on the 1st August 2013... it was been a very sad time. But Alec made it over for the funeral yesterday.

I can only thank you all for this xx

Hi Sonstar

Was just going thru my list of updates topics...and realised your update  message of August relates back to where we left off in 2008!

I'm glad you were able to re'unite with kiwi family  - I do so  hope one of the visits was made before your Grandad passed away. But if not, (or even if so!) I'm sure he was really pleased  that you were able to find them  ;D

Sorry to hear the news, RIP Grandad.

Kind regards

Thanks Ambly!

He came over when I was pregnant with my son, so 3 years ago pretty much to the month. He spent time with Grandad and they caught up - it was great. I am so so glad that they had that opportunity. Its funny he looks a lot like Grandad, you would think they were father and son not uncle and nephew.

Alec is coming back to see us all in a few weeks, we are hoping to have some happier times before they jet back to NZ.

I really appreciate all of the help you gave us when I was searching. It means the world to me and I know my Grandad was grateful too. x
