That's great  :D Spelling of surnames at the time were relatively fluid as you have seen with your Hi(y)slop/ Hesslehurst names.

Makes for fun research  ::)

Just had a thought  ::)

Have you ever tried to investigate whether Poor Relief Records remain for Flora McKay Hislop including her time at the Poor house. These records, if they still exist, could provide you with a lot of detail that you wouldn't be able to find elsewhere. Glasgow is particularly good for keeping these records historically (many other areas weren't and have destroyed them over the years). I believe these records are kept at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow and require a personal search. Maybe a route to follow up?

 Hi Monica ,
                 That can go on the To Do List.
                 I will try to find what happened to sons John and Robert from the 1841 Census first.
                  There is a Photo on " The Glasgow Story " of Burnside Street in the Cowcaddens section. I hope 56 was on the right hand side of the photo.
                       Thank you for your help,

Jean

Possible entry for son John in 1861, married to a Jane Kyle. Everyone born Glasgow:

John Hislop 37, iron dresser
Jane Hislop 34
Matthew Hislop 16
Scott Hislop 13
Marion Hislop 11
John Hislop 2
Marion Waldey 60, mother in law
Jane Hislop 22, visitor, cotton weaver - I wonder is this is sister Jane, if we have the right family

Address: Nelson's Land, Govan Renfrewshire

 Hi Monica , That looks interesting.John being an iron dresser would fit well with Matthew being a smith. Richard`s sons were an Iron moulder and two Blacksmiths.I will try to follow them up.
                 Had visitors yesterday so haven`t had time for searching but did see a Robert Hyslop and wife Christina living in Drygate Street. Richard Hislop / Hesslehurst lived there for a number of years but it might be coincidence.
                 Plenty to keep me busy,

 Hi Monica,
                Matthew Hislop( 16 in 1861 Census) was born to John Hislop + Jane Kyle 10 Feb 1845 - Witnesses Scott Waldie and Baird McKay.
                Of course , I can`t find any Baird McKay but this does look quite likely as part of Matthew`s family.
                Found Flora in the 1841 census .
     Widow McKay 55 , Hector 15 a Sharper , William 11 a Foundry apprentice , Flora 10 and Daniel 7 - all born in Glasgow - and they are living in Burnside. Baird and other siblings could have left home as the Mother is 55 - there probably were others.
                 Getting giddy - need a coffee!

 Kyle - Waldie -Hislop - Harrower- Hesslehurst
        Hi Monica,
                       That family you found for me is indeed the one I was looking for. Marion Waldie ( maiden Surname Stirling ) was first married to James Kyle and later to Scott Waldie. Marion`s Death record was signed by Rebecca Kyle ( daughter in law.
                        So , that family group grows ever larger.
                        What I hope for , however , is to find somebody with the knowledge about the Hesslehurst men , Richard and Matthew who chose to come to Scotland and live as Hyslop or Hislop. There were plenty of descendants and somebody out there knows!
