Almost certainly clerk.

PS Appreciate, what I consider, the correct spelling of clerk.  :)

on a seperate track where can I found out how far the dunbar/haddington/yester records go back on scotlandspeople.gov.uk

As I have a wedding on 12/7/1799 in dunbar. but can't find a good birth cert. The people in question are charles black and janet watson. Having had a quick search the most likely candidate is a charles black born in Queensferry, west lothian 19/2/1777. on the basis that his mother is a katharine blackwood, and that charles and janet have a daughter cathrine. ie to unusual spellings. I just feel uneasy with the distance as the next 5 generations move no more than 5 miles
