Help with Ada Olive Smith
« on: Saturday 13 September 08 14:04 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm looking for help finding info on my grandmother Ada Olive Smith (abt 1890) and her parents. 1901 Census has Ada living with her grandparents Moses Smith and Olive Smith. 1891 Census Ada Olive aged 1 is living with her parents Thomas Smith (28) and Ada Marie (28). The 1901 Census also lists a grandson, Leonard T, aged 8, living with grandparents Moses and Olive Smith.  Have assumed the 2 grandchildren are living with grandparents because parents have died, but cannot find any details on parents death.

Ada Olive Smith also appears to have married my grandfather William Thomas Hammond twice.  In 1904 and in 1906.  Any suggestions as to why married twice?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

Hi Winston,
Thank you for responding. Quite possibly Ada did marry at 14 and this was not legal. My mother came to Australia in 1952 and did not know a lot about her mother and her family. She said that her mother Ada never mentioned her parents and only mentioned her grandparents. My mother was unaware that her mum had married her dad twice and was puzzled about this.
When my parents came to Australia with 4 children, they left all their relatives behind in England. Dad had 5 sisters and 1 brother and Mum 4 sisters and 2 brothers. They had 3 more children after arriving in Australia.  Have just started looking into my parents family and have found quite a bit about the Egglestons from Croydon, Hammonds from Brighton and later Croydon, but very little about Ada Olive Grey Smith and her family.

From 1753 to 1929 the minum age of marriage for girls was 12 and for boys 14. In 1929 that was raised for both to 16. However any marriage of a minor - a person under the age of 21 needed the permission of their legal guardian - usually their nearest male relative.

Hi Valda,
Thank you for this information.  I have found a birth entry for Ada Maria Smith
1862  July Aug Sept  Ada Maria Smith   Islington 1b205

The 1891 Census information provided for Ada Maria Smith gives her birthplace as Holloway London.  Holloway is an inner city district in the London Burough of Islington, therefore a very good lead for me to follow.

The details on marriages is interesting. Thank you.

But Smith was Ada Maria's married name? Have you any reason to believe her maiden name was also Smith?
If the 1887 marriage entry is correct her maiden name was Warren.

Births Sep 1862
WARREN  Ada Maria    Islington  1b 203

You can know for certain what Ada Maria's maiden name was by either obtaining one of the children's birth certificates or the 1887 marriage, which should give the details for Moses for Thomas' father if the marriage is correct.

A possible but you really need the details from the 1887 marriage to confirm Ada Maria's father's name.

1871 census RG10 707 folio 34
10 Stewarts Lane Battersea Surrey
Richard Warren 46 Head Married Bricklayer Denton Lincolnshire
Ann Warren 48  Wife Married Newark Northamptonshire
Jane A Warren 13  Daughter No occupation Doncaster Yorkshire
Walter Warren 11  Son Doncaster Yorkshire
Ada Warren 8 Daughter Islington Middlesex
Minnie Warren 6 Daughter Holloway Middlesex
Laura? Warren 4 Daughter Holloway Middlesex

1861 census RG9 2352 folio 69
?antley Street Spittlegate Grantham Lincolnshire
Ann Maria Warren 37 Head Married Bricklayer's wife  Newark Nottinghamshire
Walter Warren 11 Months Doncaster Yorkshire

1861 census RG9 2349 folio 91
Denton Lincolnshire
Richard Warren 60 Head Married Ag lab Denton Lincolnshire
Elizabeth Warren 63 Wife Married Denton Lincolnshire
John Warren 37 Son Married Ag lab Denton Lincolnshire
Mary Warren 33 Son's Wife Married Belton Lincolnshire
Alfred Warren 2 Grandson Denton Lincolnshire
Matilda Warren 4 Granddaughter Doncaster Yorkshire
Jane Alice Warren 3 Granddaughter Doncaster Yorkshire

1861 census RG9 390 folio 16
5 Lavender Lane Rotherhithe Surrey
Richard Warren 37 Married Boarder Bricklayer NK Lincolnshire

Deaths Mar 1878
Warren  Ann Maria  55  Wandsworth  1d 460

I can't see Richard on the 1881 census and by then the younger girls are all in service.

Marriages Sep 1852
ARMSTON  Ann Maria    Grantham  7a 663
WARREN  Richard     Grantham  7a 663

Hi Valda,
Thank you for all the information you have provided. Your previous post had me very excited and I mistakenly typed Ada Maria Smith instead of Ada Maria Warren.
I have sent away for both of my grandmother's marriage certificates (Ada Olive Smith) and will do as you suggest and get a copy of Ada Maria's 1887 marriage certificate.  I will also get Ada Olive Smith's birth certificate.  Marriage certificates I have ordered should arrive from England in approx 2 weeks.
I am very pleased with progress so far. My grandmother's family history has been a bit of a mystery to her own children as she never spoke about her parents.  Access to this forum and tremendous help and support by "experts" in family research has certainly helped me get this far.  Will keep you posted on information received.   Regards Kaybron
