Maybe a niece married a Mr A Cutts. there is no official name for a niece's husband (I never know what to call mine) so maybe he called himself nephew for ease.

Or maybe there was a daughter between Joseph and Samuel who wasnt at home in 1861 and was married by '71, or even a daughter older than Thomas who was married by 1861. (to a Cutts of course!)

Probably a wild card but I have a Martin-Cutts connection in my tree.

John Joseph Martin, b 1867, Chesterfield, m Elizabeth Hemsley in May 1888.  Her mother was Mary Cutts, but I think that was from a marriage before she became a Hemsley (i.e. not her maiden name).

Sherwood.
