Hulse Family, Burton on Trent / Scotland
« on: Saturday 13 September 08 17:28 BST (UK) »
Hi I am trying to trace a Henry William Hulse, I have his marriage 31/8/1857 at Duthil in Scotland to Mary Grant where he lists his residence as Burton on Trent, he being a 34 yr old widower and a gamekeeper. I can not find this previous wedding of his at all. He is not on the 1861 census with his wife and child, I can not find also a birth certif for him! Any idea's of where else to look? I have got a death certif 8/6/1884 of a Henry William Hulse age 61 gamekeeper, which sounds right, but its in Tranmere Birkenhead, so not 100%! Any idea's very much appreciated

No, his parents aren't shown on the wedding certif, and I would never have found a birth certif if he was from Surrey, he really moved around if thats him!!!!!!

where he lists his residence as Burton on Trent,

But that was not necessarily his birthplace so we need to try and find him on earlier censuses

He is not with the family in 1871 either - Mary is transcribed as Phelse and they are living with her father John Grant aged 72

Was Mary Grant married previously as the 1871 shows an 18 yr old Mary Grant as granddaughter and as Mary Hulse was 43 in 1871 Mary jnr could be her daughter or could be the child of one of Mary's brothers

Haven't sorted out all the Mary Grants, on the one census there are 2 mary grants and Mary Hulse who was a Grant. Also a Jane Ross, daughter of a Mary Grant, very confusing! I did find a Henry Hulse on the 1871 Welsh census, living as a married Game keeper with Anne Davies at Lower Caio Carmarthanshire. I'm just unsure how can you possibly know if its the right Henry with him moving around so much, I also find it strange him and Mary had no more children, you would have thought he'd have visited to see his son. Thank you so much for your help I seemed to be hitting a brick wall!

Hi

The occupation of gamekeeper is not a common or garden one and coupled with his name I think you can be reasonably certain the entries are the right ones - but he certainly did get around didn't he

Checked using the IGI way for siblings and found a Augustus Fredrick Christened 31/7/1825 with the same parents, I will look on Ancestry for him and see where that takes me!

There is a Braunston in Leicestershire but not in Staffordshire.

Suggest that it is Branston, Burton upon Trent !
