Andrew Cowe (nurseryman in Coldingham)c.1835
« on: Saturday 13 September 08 19:45 BST (UK) »
Hi All!
This is my first posting. Can anyone supply me with any information about my ancestor ANDREW COWE who was a Nurseryman in Coldingham. I know that he was married sometime around 1835 to Mary Crawford, but had previously been married to Elizabeth Bishop in 1825. I think his nursery was called "Hill Gardens". I'd like to find the location of the nursery, and any information about Andrew Cowe's family and ancestors. I have his children as Mary Anne (b.1835), Robert (b.1836), William George (b.1842 - my Great Grandfather) and possibly others, but not yet traced. Many thanks, Bill.

Hi Willco

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

The marriage of Andrew to Mary Crawford looks by the Old Parish entry to have taken place a few years earlier on 27 MAY 1833      Coldingham.

Struggling to find Andrew and Mary with children on the census indexes I am look at. Have you been able to find them in the earlier censuses?

Hi Willco, there is a death record on SP that looks promising

1879 COWE ANDREW     aged 75 at COCKBURNSPATH Berwick

If it is the right one it will give his parents names if known by the informant

That scuppers my theory Sancti as to why I couldn't find the family in the early censuses!   I wondered whether Andrew had died early. There is an entry in Will & Testaments on Scotlands People and I wondered whether it referred to him:

Andrew Cowe, 07/08/1847, Portioner*. Coldinghamhill, Coldingham. d.05/04/1847 - Testament Testamentar at Duns Sheriff Court Wills   SC60/44/3. Also, I and Extract Registered Trust Disposition and S at Duns Sheriff Court Inventories, Ref SC60/41/11

* A portioner in Scotland can mean Owner of land, previously divided amongst co-heirs www.scotsfamily.com/occupations.htm

Not sure about the Andrew who died in Cockburnspath - he looks to have been a carter and lodging house keeper in the earlier censuses at Cockburnspath.

That looks a strong possibility for the family Beckey  :)  Would fit in with that entry in Wills & Testaments in 1847.

I think this may be the modern postcode for Coldingham Hill: TD14 5QB.  For an old map, see www.old-maps.co.uk, co-ordinates 390300:666200.
