Tracing lost family
« on: Monday 15 September 08 23:52 BST (UK) »
My ggg aunt Ann PERKINS was born in Gainsborough in 1827 and married William COTTINGHAM at All Saints Church, Gainsborough in 1849.

In 1851 they were at Glentworth and in 1861 they had moved to Owmby by Spital. They were still there in 1871. After that the family simply disappears.  :-\

They had the following children:
Henry (b. abt 1850 at Glentworth)
Tom (b. abt 1853 at Gainsborough or Glentworth)
William (b. 1855 at Glentworth)
Eliza (b. abt 1855 at Gainsborough - died 1865 at Owmby Cliff)
William (b. abt 1857 at Gainsborough)
Harriet (b. abt 1858 at Owmby by Spital)
Rachel (b. 1860 at Owmby by Spital)
Anne (b. abt 1864 at Owmby by Spital)

If anyone can shed any light as to their whereabouts after 1871, I would be very grateful for any assistance.

Hi Rover72

In 1871, Cross Houses, Ownby - household of William 45 (born abt 1826) an Ag Lab born Glentworth and wife Ann , with daughters Harriet 13, Rachel 11 and Anne 7.

Son Henry might be  a servant/Ag Lab in Hemswell Lincs,  here:
RG10/ Piece: 3442 /  Folio: 19 /  Pg2

And son Thomas is not far away?
RG10 /  Piece: 3442 /  Folio: 27 / pg 17

Couldn't find younger son, William b abt 1857 in 1871 (I  assume the elder son William born abt 1855 died before 1856/57)

I think.......they may have  immigrated Lock Stock and Barrell ...to Ontario, Canada.

This was the one little clue:
On the FreeBMD is:
MARRIAGE: Henry COTTINGHAM and the only other name on the FreeBMD page is: Sarah Ann LILLY

On the 1881 Census of Canada is:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp

Dau: Iva COTTINGHAM 4, b 16 Dec 1896 Ontario
Boarder: Isobel WILSON 22, single, Teacher, b 18 Feb 1879, Presbytarian.
All Methodist except the Boarder.

I didn't find Henry in 1901 - possibly mispelled name.

If this is your missing family - at the time of the 1871 English Census, Ann COTTINGHAM nee PERKINS must have been pregnant with son Elijah.

Which would bring the total of living children by the end of 1871 to :
4 sons: Henry, William, Thomas and Elijah.
3 daughters: Harriet, Rachel and Anne

FreeBMD BIRTH:
Elijah COTTINGHAM - Dec Qtr 1871 Lincoln.

I think daughter Anne, in the 1881 Canada Census as Annie age 11, is probably a mistranscript.  If  this is your family, possibly she is actually about 17 here?

The only one I can't "see" in Canada is daughter Harriet - but she may have married before 1881.

If you would now post a message on the Immigrants to Canada board here at Rootschat (including a link back to this topic perhaps) hopefully you will find out a lot more.

Specifically, request help for look ups:
1891 Census
Henry and family  in 1901
Death  of Ann COTTINGHAM between 1891 and 1901 - probably in Kent, Ontario**
Death of William COTTINGHAM between 1901 and probably 1911 - probably in Kent, Ontario**
Marriage of Rachel COTTINGHAM, to a man named possibly, TRAVIS or similar.
Birth of Adelaide TRAVIS
Birth of Bernice ERWIN

Also try for :
marriage of Elijah (should name his mother's maiden name)
marriage of William (should name his mother's maiden name)
birth of one of Thomas children (for maiden name of his wife as they poss married in England).

** I think:-- Ann died 1901 before the Census, and William died 1901 after the census.

Thomas, at least,  is on the 1911 for Ontario too:
http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/SurnameSearch.jsp?surname=Cottingham&province=Ontario

Ontario also has a good site for cemeteries:
http://www.islandnet.com/ocfa/homepage.html
Unfortunately the search engine is down at present (but is being fixed)

Cheers  ;D

Hi Ambly,

The information you have found is fantastic. That definitely is them and the fact that they were listed mainly as methodists is interesting as Ann COTTINGHAM (née PERKINS) was from a methodist family.

The name Elijah is also interesting because Ann had a younger brother with the same name.

Will definitely follow these leads up. THANK YOU!

Hi rover72

I am very grateful that I found your message as I am now in the process of working on the genealogy for the Cottingham family.

William Cottingham and Ann Perkins are my great grandfather and great grandmother. William died on September 13, 1903 and Ann on January 9, 1900. They are both buried in Fairview Cemetery, Kent County, Wheatley, Ontario Canada.

They immigrated to Canada in 1876 settling in East Zorra Twp., Oxford County. At that time they had 4 sons and 2 daughters (William, Henry (who was my grandfather), Annie, Harietta, Elijah and Tom. They farmed there for about 6 years then returned to England. They remained there for 5 years and then returned to Canada where they located in Romney Township, Kent County, Ontario where some of their family were living on farms that they had purchased.

Henry was born June 6, 1849 in Glentworth and married Sarah Ann Lilly (born Feb 1, 1852 in Scampton, Lincolnshire, England) in England in 1869. Sarah died July 2, 1918 and Henry died Jan 23, 1945. Both are buried in Maple Leaf Cemetery, Tilbury West Township, Ontario, Canada as is my father, Frederick John Cottingham and my mother Agnes Gertrude Cottingham (nee Holland)

I have lots of information dating back to Thomas Cottingham (my ggggg grandfather) who was born in 1709, Faldingworth, Glentworth, Lincolnshire England.

Hi Concorde

Welcome to Rootschat  ;D

Wow! Looks like yourself and Rover72 find much to discuss!

You mention that when they went to Canada initially, they had 4 sons & 2 daughters.
There was actually a 3rd daughter, Rachel who also immigrated with them.

Rover's follow on posting on the canada boards is here:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,328924.15.html

All the information we had found to date, suggested Ann died 29 Feb 1901.....
I have seen the image correspoinding to this death:
female, date of death Feb 29, 1901, age 73, # house or lot 17, concession or street 6th, housewife, married, birthplace: England; cause of death: pneumonia 12 days; attending physician: Dr S Sharp; Religion: M
