Is E. Ireland not the name of the photographer?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Ah

Good thinking!  That came from a none stop search for clues about Ireland from my relatives down there!

It's cut off, but now you mention it it probably is.

Best wishes

Excellent!  ;D

I have a photo from the Ireland studio in Newton Heath as well - later directories have them with premises at Mosley St, central Manchester, which is a bit nearer Hulme

From Free BMDs, in case you haven't found them yet - Carl Beever Caltenbach birth registered  Oct - Dec 1879, Manchester.
His father Carl snr married Mary Ellen Swift, Oct-Dec 1878, also Manchester.
So Carl senior perhaps came to England between 1871 (if not on census) and 1878... Isn't it sad that they were established in Manchester such a long time, but still needed to change their name when the war broke out?

E Ireland 17 Piccadilly opposite the Infirmary - Mr Ireland gets about a bit.  Just got to find out where Uncle Jim Longden fits in now!! He looks like abraham lincoln doesn't he!!!

I was so excited to find this great website!  I purchased a pocket watch key that has the name of the shop, the address and Watchmaker and Jeweler on the back.  I collect antique advertising memorabilia and the key is one of my favorite pieces.  It was so interesting to read the various posts and see the photos submitted.  I would love to know more about the shop and the kinds of jewelry that were sold.  Would you consider sending me a PM about the history of the shop?

Many thanks!  Linda :)
