I am back again for another favour please. This picture has been sent to me, and I understand the original to be very small. I do not know if resolution is acceptable or not. Any help to improve it would be appreciated.

If resolution not good enough I will try to obtain the original and rescan myself. Please let me know on this . Thank you in advance . Genie

Hi Genie

It is usually good practise the scan  small pics with resolution set as high as you can
1200 dpi or more if possible (the higher the dpi the slower the scan)
Lower resolutions cause pixelation when enlarged
Pixelation is one of the big pains in restoring

thank you very much for the advice. As this was sent to me already scanned on a CD I thought I would try it as it was. I will obtain the orginal when I can and rescan myself. Thank you for your time though. All the best as ever Genie

thank you for taking the time to do this. It is much better.

I think perhaps I should say to everyone not spend precious time on this one. I will ask for the original and scan it myself at a higher resolution.

In retrospect should have done this anyway. Sorry folks.

Sorry to but in, but 300 ppi is the optimum for scanning for posting on the board.  Less than 300 ppi and the resolution is to low, higher than 300 ppi and you  need more compression to fit on here.   300 ppi is the happy medium.

I have checked and the picture is at 300 dpi and still pixelates
Must be scanned from a very small original

That is why I recommended scanning at a higher resolution
