New Windsor Infantry Barracks And Hospital
« on: Thursday 18 September 08 14:11 BST (UK) »
Hi, I'm hoping someone out there can give me a few pointers in where to look to determine which regiment my ancestor Thomas Goom (b. 1831, Bray Berkshire) would have served in. He was listed as a soldier at new windsor infantry barracks and hospital, berkshire in the 1861 census but i have no other information about his military service
Thanks in advance
Sue

Hi Sue

If you go to page 1 of the census return you will see that it says that the officers and senior NCOs were in the Grenadier Guards. They must have been guarding Queen Victoria.

Here is a link for researching military men in the NA - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/militaryhistory/army/step4.htm

They are all original documents so you will have to visit Kew. But from his age he may have been with the regiment in the Crimea, so you could ask for a medal roll look up, either here, or on the British Medal Forum. The medal rolls are on microfilm in Kew.

hi I also had a relative in the Clewer & New Windsor Infantry Barracks and Hospital it was stated that he was a private in the 1901 census aged 22.

Do you know how Ican find out what his regiment was?  he was born in Swansea Glamorgan in 1879

Is he Private George Lane?

If so, it says he was in the Grenadier Guards.

There were some Life Guards listed at these barracks as well.

Lucky guess - there were three from Swansea of the right age, all in the Grenadier Guards, but he was the only one listed in the name column (rather than another column) as Private!

One of my wife's ancestors was described as being a Color Sergeant at the Barracks. However I can find no trace of him in the census records for 1881 or 1891. In between those years he seems to be missing with no trace anywhere.

His wife was allegedly employed in the castle. Again records for her are equally lacking for 1891.

Any idea of where I can start looking?

Welcome to Rootschat, Dr Bob.

Can you give us some detail on the Colour Sergeant and his wife? Names, birthyears, birthplaces, regiment if known?
