Rutherford, Rodgers, Kilgour..Jarrow/Scotland
« on: Saturday 29 January 05 19:36 GMT (UK) »
Trying to find parents for James Kilgour born abt 1843 Scotland(possibly Govan) married Mary Jane Rutherford South Shields 1871, he died 1876. She then married David Rodger/Rogers 1880 South Shields, he was born abt 1851/5 Scotland, age changes on cenus. David has a brother Peter (born abt 1860) living with him on the 1881 cenus but I can't match parents up with them. The name Major ( first name) runs through the Rutherford/Kilgour family.

The 1871 census has

James KILGOUR, 26, Head, Married, Plater in Ship Yard, Ireland ???
Mary J KILGOUR, 16, Wife, Married, Northumberland Stamfordham

These are the only two in the household.  The transcription definitely says Ireland, so this may not be your man.

They are living at 39 North St, Jarrow Durham.

In the same house (but not household) are:

James KERNEY, Head, married, 40, Labourer in Ship Yards, Ireland
Mary KERNEY, Wife, married, 40, Ireland
John KILGOUR, stepson, 14, Ireland
Hugh Kilgour, stepson, 10, Ireland

cheers

Paul

Hi June

Yes - potentially messy!
I suspect the Mary J is one and the same (Stamfordham birth), but why James from Ireland I would't know.

John and Hugh look too old to be anything to do with James, so it may be a coincidence.

What does 1881 say?

Best wishes

Paul

By 1881 James had died, Mary had remarried and was living with her children by James, two born in Jarrow and two in Sotland. Her new husband David Rodger states he was born in Scotland and they had one child together by 1881......Poor Mary Jane only 26 what a life.  Regards June
