Looking for Alice Harrington
« on: Friday 19 September 08 08:36 BST (UK) »
I am looking for Alice (Mary I think) Harrington born 1899 in West Ham.

I have her in the 1901 UK Census with father Arthur Harrington, mother Frances Harrington and a step or half sister Elsie Waller.

The family think that she may have been put in an orphanage, it really would be nice to find out what happened to her.  Is there a way of checking orphanages around West Ham during 1900 - 1915?

There was a brother Henry Harrington born in 1902 who migrated to the US in 1921.

Cheers, Kevin

Hi Kevin,

This looks like her birth registration:

Alice Mary Harrington   SepQ 1899  W.Ham  4a 359  (Found on FreeBMD)

Can only suggest waiting for 1911 census to see if she is in an orphanage.

I would very much still like to find where Alice Harrington got to.

Did she marry and therefore a name change?
Did she die?
I believe she was in an orphanage for a short time?
Did she travel to Australia or America?

This one really is a dead end.

Thanks Jennifer C, I have her birth ....  ;D

1899 Leyton, Essex, England West Ham Vol 4a Page 359

There is also a marriage for Alice M. Harrington to John C. Soper at St George Hanover Square which spans the boundaries of the counties of London and Middlesex.  Reference 1a 1404.  close to where they lived, but I have no idea of knowing if it is her or not.  I cannot find a death that fits, so assume she grew up and got married.

Did you check out the Alice in 1911 Tonbridge Kent? We are not allowed to do look ups here for that census but it seems that Alice could well have been an orphan.
Also it has been transcribed wrongly - her place of birth being indexed as Sussex, but the image shows Surrey.

Still looking for Alice Harrington.   ;D   Sorry for not replying for so long, but after a year off to build a house, I'm back into my family tree.

I have ordered the marriage certificate to see if she married John C. Soper in 1919.  I've decided the 1911 Census won't tell me much as she would have only been 12 years old, so would expect to find her at home with Mum & Dad Arthur Benjamin Harrington and Frances (Franny) with step sister Elsie Waller and brother Henry around 9 years old.  If she WAS in an orphanage in 1911 it would be "nice to know" but I don't think it would get me any closer.

There is also a chance they are not in the 1911 Census because the family went to South Africa as missionaries around that time.

Stay tuned ..........   ;)

I've only been in this house 26 years and I haven't finished painting yet!

mutter mutter ..... forth bridge ..... mutter mutter ..... yes dear what colour did you want me to re-paint that in?
