Wareham, Corfe Castel, Langton Matravers
« on: Monday 22 September 08 00:33 BST (UK) »
Hi
I'm new to the board, but I have been researching the Keats' of Dorset for a few years now.
I go back to William Keate at East Lulworth (birth circa 1615) and Robert Keat of Corfe Castle (birth circa 1625)
They are all around this area and my Keats who came to Newfoundland, was Robert born 1767 at Wareham. That area is very hard to trace because of the fire.
I have followed them from those two places into Langton Matravers to Church Knowle and finally Wareham. Robert's (1667) grandparents died at Creech, Dorset.
The only Keats in the 1641 Oath, that I can find, was William, so I haven't been able to find where they may have come from into the Corfe area. I am only dependant on the on-line records of Dorset, so I am a bit limited, but they are great.
Other names linked to the Keats' are Newman, Colbourne, Biddlecombe, Barnes, Furseman, Stockley and many others.
I would love to hear from someone interested in these names.
Is there a site that lists the 1641 Oath?

Thank you Barbara,

Would you know if there is a site that lists who made the pledge?
I know that on the Dorset/OPC some do but most don't.

Would like to see where the Keats' and the other names were located in 1641 to follow up try to get the next link back.

Thanks again. First time I actually read the Oath.

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

I have a whole host of Corfe Castle Stockleys in my tree. At least three of my ancestors married into different Stockley lines and that whole branch just burst into a veritable jungle of Stockleys. I have been trying to untangle them ever since.

I have a few Keat/Keats in there too but I try not to wander too far to stop my tree exploding.

If you want to chat about your Keats and my Stockleys by all means PM me and we'll swap e-mail addresses.

I was told recently by a long-time Stockley contact of a 1790 census of Corfe Castle. I haven't managed to get hold of a copy yet.

Here's what Jacks told me:

Quote
I brought my copy from the Dorset record office, it is in a copy of the census records for Corfe Castle and Church Knowle (1841, 1861 and 1871) compiled by Stephen Lillington and Mike Norman, and it also include the 1790 census drawn up by Mr Pitt. It includes their occupations and probable earnings. It is published by the Somerset & Dorset Family History Society and I am sure I paid something princely like £3.50 for it!

I found it very useful to clean up a few mistakes I had.

I am also looking for where the Stockleys first came from. I am currently looking in the direction of Bere Regis but no luck yet on my George Stockley b1651.

Hi Paul,
The Stockley and Keats connection I have is Shadrach Keats and Martha Stockley married about 1730, yhe actual date escapes me right now.
Their son William Keats came to Newfoundland.
this family is actually on my mothers side of the tree.
William Keats' granddaughter married a Tilley and they are my grandmother's family.
My father's Keats came from Wareham.

I will Pm you.

Jeff

Its possible to do searches, which include details from the 1790 Corfe Castle Census, on the Federation of Family History Societies website. That is a pay-per-view site, with a minimum of 5 pounds I think. It includes info from most of the family history societies in the UK and has the advantage of giving instant results. Just a thought.

There's a partial transcription of the Bere Regis 1542 Muster Rolls here:

http://www.bereregis.org/MusterRolls.htm

which is interesting in itself.

Does anyone know of transcriptions for other areas of Dorset?

I realise it's over 100 years earlier than either of us have got but it could give us some ideas.
