The Tainsh family
« on: Monday 22 September 08 15:32 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am new to this so please forgive me if I get it wrong but here goes -
My husband's grandafther was George Tainsh. He came from Alva I believe. He married Doris Prestidge in Derby in 1941 and he died in Kidderminster whilst studying teaching in 1947.
This is all we know about him (he has a brother named William I think), as he died when my mother in law was only 5 and Doris is no longer alive. We would love to find out more if anyone could help we would be exceptionally grateful.
Teresa

Hi Teresa

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

A good way to start from where you are now, is to start verifying information as you work your way back. This way you can be confident that you are following the right lines.

Have you considered ordering the marriage cert for George and wife Doris in 1941? This would confirm George's age and also his father's name and occupation to let you try and find his parents' marriage and George's birth certificate.

I've checked Scotlands People (SP) www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, the official Scottish BMD site and there is one entry coming up in Alva:

George Tainsh, 1920, Alva, GROS Ref: 465/B0 0088

You would have to also order this cert. as you are outside of the period where you can view images for births on line at SP. Scottish birth certs are very informative and will include parents full names including mother's maiden name and when and where parents married. From this marriage cert for the parents, you will get full details of their parents and so on....

At the point you are at, it's a little bit like stepping stones  :) Once you get further back you will find it easier to find records/censuses on line for George's ancestors.

I would start first with that 1941 marriage and keep in mind that 1920 birth entry in Alva.

Monica  :)

Thanks Monica,
I forgot to put in my original message that I had his birth date but you are spot on and he was born in 1920. Thank you. It seems that I will need to order his birth certificate to get a little farther back.
Kind Regards

Teresa

You can order the birth cert. directly from SP (you can register for free) or through the GROS www.gro-scotland.gov.uk

George's marriage in 1941 is coming up in the 3rd Qrt 1941 Derby Vol. 7b Pg. 1987 - although bride's surname is showing as FISHER.

Monica

Added: Doris L. Fisher is how her name is registered.

Yes, George was her second husband the first (Eric Fisher) was killed in the war. It was a case of 3rd time lucky because after George Tainsh theres was a Tom Stewart and she managed to hold onto him for about 45years!!!

A happy ending for Doris!

Once you've got details of George's parents, post back if you need any help.

Only 18 Tainsh entries in Alva in 1901 census - his family will hopefully be easy enough to find  ;)

Tomorrow I am going to New Register House in Edinburgh where the records are kept.  Would you like me to check for any information for you?

Hello Teresa,

Did you make any headway with your Tainsh families?

Just along the road at Logie Cemetery & Churchyard, there are 3 gravestones (that I know of) to various Tainsh individuals. May or may not be related but if you want a note of the MI's, just let me know.
