Merchant Navy Abeystwyth.
« on: Wednesday 24 September 08 09:30 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find out where my G.G.Grandfather John Brodigan was born. I know he was born in 1848 and died in Aberystwyth in 1910. He served in the merchant navy and does not appear on any of the census returns. I wonder if anyone can tell me how to find out the names of the ships he served on.I would be grateful for any information.

This might be his  marrage
Y Genedl Cymreig (Caernarvon, Wales), Thursday, June 7, 1877
Brodigan - Jones May 31 at St Michaels Church Aberwyswyth.
John Brodigan morwr ( mariner) and Martha Jones, Vulcan Place, Aberwyswyth.

This is in Welsh but hopefully I have translated it correctly. :)

Perhaps he might give his fathers name which will hopefully help.

1901
Martha and family, but as you say - no John.

Dunno if you have traced Martha, but this seems to be her in
1871
The connection with the  Richards family is there. She is a step daughter.

I don`t know if this has any relevance , but as Brodigan is such an usual name in Wales - here goes.
Births, Deaths, Marriages and Obituaries
North Wales Chronicle (Bangor, Wales), Saturday, October 8, 1881
DEATH.
On the 3rd last , at Dean Street Bangor, Thomas Brodigan late of Garth-gate aged 71 years.

I really don`t know if this Thomas Brodigan is connected, but in 1871 he has a nephew named John.

1881 RG11; Piece: 5575; Folio: 114; Page: 4;
56 Dean Street Bangor
Thomas Brodigan 71 retired coachman b Ireland.
Margaret Mc Guinness 41  unm niece b Ireland,

1871 RG10; Piece: 5726; Folio: 8; Page: 16
Glyn Garth’s Lodge Lladegfan  Anglesey,  Could this be John ??
On the same page as John are quite few mariners, pilots etc. Could this be a link to a job at sea.
Thomas Brodigan 59 farmer b Ireland
Sarah 54 wife b Halifax.
John Brodigan 18 nephew b Liverpool.
Joanna Maguire 25 visitor b Hull.

And this seems to be Thomas in 1851.

Thomas Brodigan  37 coachman b Ireland.
Sarah wife 34 dressmaker b Halifax.

Thankyou for your rely. I don,t think the John Brodigan living with Thomas Brodigan in 1871 is the same one i,m looking for. I believe my John was born in Ireland not Aberystwyth as it claims on the crew list. On another crew list his place of birth is given as Keil. I have a copy of the marriage cert you mention and it is definitely the right one, he gives his fathers name as John and his occupation as carpenter.
