"Not to be used for begging purposes"
« on: Wednesday 24 September 08 23:31 BST (UK) »
This is printed on the birth certificate of a child born out of wedlock.(1909)
card issued 1924. Is anyone familiar with this? how does one find the Mother who apparently "went to prison for  child abuse.(1914 there-abouts)
How to find Court records?
This is my first stab at this, so apologies for any bad et ticate.

Hi Parsnip

Welcome to Rootschat  ;D

Rootschatters have a very good success rate when it comes to 'sniffing out' details but a name (as long as they are deceased) and the area of London this is supposed to have happened in often helps.

Yes of course you are right. The Certificate reads," I certify that Cecelia Barnfield of 2 Upper Marlebone St gave birth to a female child on july  ?1909"
Apparently the Mother went to prison for child abuse several years later, but  I don't know the date of this.
I would dearly like to know something of the Mother, and also more about the court proceedings.

Hmm.
freebmd.rootsweb.com shows Lilian Barnfield, b. Dec 1910 quarter, Fulham, 1a page 243
and a second in the same quarter, same name, with the page number replaced by 'see June 1924'.
But if she was born 'July 1909' then the Dec quarter 1910 reference is odd.

Who was it who gave the information about Lilian's birth?

NA has a Research Guide 'Sources for Convicts and Prisoners'
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=253

I didn't find anything in the Times archive or the Guardian archive.
In the 1910 historical directories, 2 Upper Marylebone Street was occupied by Gustav Bart ,hairdresser. He was also there in 1915.

The child needed a Birth certificate,to start work. this was the one given.
I thought it interesting to see that restriction stamped across the page. It caused horror and embarrassment, and for many years was kept secret.
My journey is to find any descendent's of Cecelia Barnfield, for the Father and the child, have long passed away. Thanks for your help, especially the mention of Fulham. And so, back on my horse, thanks again.

Jorose, I can't thank you enough,it would seem that the Mother gave the information. ( a Birth certificate would be required in order to start work).
It seems that the Mother used the name Cecelia.
Your mention of Fulham intrigues me, I shall search information for Lillian, and hope that she had other offspring.
thanks again.
