William Forrester - Slamannan
« on: Thursday 25 September 08 03:57 BST (UK) »
Trying to trace the wife of William Forrester. William was born 6/6/1868 in Slammanan. His parents were Alexander Forrester and Mary Holden. I can't find his wife anywhere. I think he had a daughter, Mary Forrester, born in Linlithgow, she was born about 1890.

Thanks, Alison

Hi Alison

William looks to be living with his mother in Linlithgow in 1891, going by the census for that year. By 1901, he shows with just daughter Mary age 11. Likely wife died? There is a marriage showing on Scotlands People in 1892 in Linlithgow for a William Forrester, possibly his.

There are no births showing for a Mary Forrester between 1890-92 in Linlithgow. If she was born there before the parents were married, her birth registration may well have been with her mother's maiden name. If you look at the image of the marriage cert on line at Scotlands People, it will give you wife's details which will then let you search for Mary's birth to confirm the right birth for her.

Hi,
Also have William and Jane (Sister) children of Alexander and Mary Holden on my tree, 1892 marriage in Linlithgow, is to Maggie Russell White and this is not correct William Forrester, who is the child of William and Jessie Rae. Possible wives in Stirlingshire are:
Marion Allan, Kilsyth 1888.(Marriage dates.)
Agnes Campbell, Denny, 1894.
Mary Kennedy, Falkirk Burgh, 1886.
Elizabeth Mitchell, Falkirk, 1898.
Mary Robertson, Grangemouth, 1899.
(All marriages for William Forresters in Stirlingshire 1889 onwards.)
There are also several later dated marriages but I feel these are the more likely candidates.
                         Cheers,
                               Dunmac.
P.S. Sorry Monica, been there, done that, moved on.
P.P.S. Should also say Mary born 1890 in Slamannan is another family to a James and Jane Whyte, all other Mary Forresters 1889-1892, are either, Lanarkshire, Fife, Midlothian or Renfrew births., in that timescale.  (None listed in Linlithgow, on SP.)

Totally confused by that Dunmac  :P

Going by Alison's first post, she is looking for a William F b. 1868 in Slammanan, son of Alexander and Mary with a daughter Mary born in Linlithgow c. 1890.

The 1891 census showed:

Mary Forrester 59, b. Barony Glasgow
William Forrester 21, son, shale miner, b. Slammanan
James Dickson 12, grandson, b. Linlithgow

Address: Linlithgow Bridge North Side, Linlithgow

The original image would show William's marital status (single/married)

In 1901 we have:

William Forrester 33, shale miner, b. Slammanan
Mary Forrester 11, daughter, b. Linlithgow
James Dickson 22, Ploughman, boarder, b. Linlithgow

Address: Viaduct Cottages, Muiravonside

Again, the original image for 1901 would show William's marital status (widower etc.)

Also, just found this for 1891:

Charles Charleston    53, labourer, b. Carriden, Linlithgowshire
Margaret Charleston 51, b. Uphall, Linlithgowshire
Elizabeth Charleston 26, b. Currie Edinburgh, Kinleith
Charles Charleston    22, lab., b. Currie Edinburgh, Rosebank
Maggie Charleston 20, b. Linlithgow
James Charleston 16, b. Linlithgow
Maggie Charleston 6, granddaughter, b. Linlithgow
Lizzie Charleston 5, granddaughter, b. Linlithgow
Mary Forrester 14 Mths, granddaughter, b. Linlithgow

Address: 307 High Street, Linlithgow

There is also a birth showing on SP in 1890 Linlithgow for a Mary CHARLESTON....

Monica

Added: There are no Forrester/Charleston marriages showing so maybe William and Charleston girl never married? Don't suppose a marriage has been found as yet for daughter Mary to see who she put down as mother?

Hi Monica,
Mary Holden was married to a Adam Dickson(8/5/1853, Glasgow.) before Alexander Forrester, union (no marriage found) and Mary came from Glasgow that's correct; 4 children to Adam, Adam 1855, Glasgow, John 1857, Slamannan, Mary 1860, Slamannan, Janet 1863, Slamannan; then two children to Alexander, Jane 1866, Slamannan, William 1868, Slamannan. I've searched all regions for further marriages and children, to no avail under Forrester and Dickson surnames and tried Mary Forrester in search born 1890, Slamannan but her parents were James Forrester, Shoemaker and Jane Whyte, married Whitburn 1874. Only trying to save time and money in further searches, I've already made in my own hunt for the family.
                                                              Regards,
                                                                       Dunmac.
P.S. Welcome all input myself and good luck Alison.

Hi Monica,
Mary Charleston (Illegitimate) born 1890 in Linlithgow is the child of Elizabeth Charleston, Domestic Servant, 668/00 0286, born 24/11/1890, Kettleston Main.
                          Another brick in the wall.
                                                                                 Regards,
