Sounds like you have been round the houses on this Duncan :)

From the birth details you posted for the Mary Charleston b. 1890, daughter of Elizabeth Charleston , looks like she is daughter of the Elizabeth Charleston, domestic servant, who shows with parents and daughter Mary Forrester in 1891 at 307 High Street Linlithgow.

Just out of interest, have you seen the original image for James Forrester in 1901 to check his marital status?

Totally confused by that Dunmac  :P

Going by Alison's first post, she is looking for a William F b. 1868 in Slammanan, son of Alexander and Mary with a daughter Mary born in Linlithgow c. 1890.

The 1891 census showed:

Mary Forrester 59, b. Barony Glasgow
William Forrester 21, son, shale miner, b. Slammanan
James Dickson 12, grandson, b. Linlithgow

Address: Linlithgow Bridge North Side, Linlithgow

The original image would show William's marital status (single/married)

In 1901 we have:

William Forrester 33, shale miner, b. Slammanan
Mary Forrester 11, daughter, b. Linlithgow
James Dickson 22, Ploughman, boarder, b. Linlithgow

Address: Viaduct Cottages, Muiravonside

Again, the original image for 1901 would show William's marital status (widower etc.)

Also, just found this for 1891:

Charles Charleston    53, labourer, b. Carriden, Linlithgowshire
Margaret Charleston 51, b. Uphall, Linlithgowshire
Elizabeth Charleston 26, b. Currie Edinburgh, Kinleith
Charles Charleston    22, lab., b. Currie Edinburgh, Rosebank
Maggie Charleston 20, b. Linlithgow
James Charleston 16, b. Linlithgow
Maggie Charleston 6, granddaughter, b. Linlithgow
Lizzie Charleston 5, granddaughter, b. Linlithgow
Mary Forrester 14 Mths, granddaughter, b. Linlithgow

Address: 307 High Street, Linlithgow

Monica  :)

Hi Monica, William is a widower on the 1901 Census, nothing further to add to your 1901 listing.

Hi,
Fellow researcher Pam, has solved descendant in Linlithgow conundrum.
Jane Grinton Paton Forrester, daughter of Alexander and Mary Holden married Richard B. Gray, Shale Miner, 1888 in Linlithgow and one child of union Mary Holden Gray was born same year(Illegitimate child pre marriage.) . Pam has found 1901 Census for this family in Muiravonside with several other children by then.
            Regards,
                      Dunmac.
Richard Gray Head, 36, Shale Miner, Inveresk, Edinburghshire.
Annie M. Gray, 2.
Jane Gray, 35, Slamannan.
Jane P. Gray, 7.
Mary D. Gray, 11.
Napoleon Gray, 9.
William F. Gray, 4.

So Mary Dickson Gray born born Linlithgow 1889, Mary Holden Gray 1888, must have died? would be the Mary we have been looking for.
Thanks Pam for solving this!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;)

Hi Duncan

Glad you are all making progress  :)

Just one question...If you have the Mary D Gray, 11 (born 1889 in Linlithgow) with parents Richard and Jane in 1901 Muiravonside, you still have the unresolved issue of who the Mary Forrester (b. circa 1890 Linlithgow) is that shows as daughter to William, in 1901....or have I missed something...

Richard Gray 20, shale miner, b. Musselburgh, Mid Lothian
Jane Gray 23, b. Slamanan, Stirlingshire
Mary Gray 1, b. Linlithgow

Address: Linlithgow Bridge North Side, Linlithgow

Hi Monica,
As no births for Mary Forrester exist in Lithlithgow for that period on SP. I can only guess that perhaps Mary Holden Gray was taken in by William and Gray name dropped, await 1911 Census to fill this space. Or information at start of post was incorrect  or Mary visiting at Census time??? Alison can you add any details????
                                                                              Regards,
                                                                                     Duncan.
P.S. Can you find a Marriage for William, Monica??????

Hi,
On official 1901 Census for William Forrester at 49 Viaduct Cottages, Muiravonside, I noted that family of Richard Gray and Jane Forrester his sister live right next door at No 50. I think his Mary noted here, is in fact the illegitimate offspring before marrige of his sister who he has taken in to hide this fact and as Jane had another Mary the following year and now married, no one would suspect anything and Richard and Jane would still be able to be close to this daughter out of wedlock. The Dickson family also come and go in these households at various times, stepbrothers and sisters of Jane & William Forrester.
            Hope this helps,
                                    Dunmac.

P.S. Monica & Alison, do you have any clues as to how or where the Charleston family fit in?? :'(

Duncan

Let's see what information Alison can add and what her interest is on William and daughter Mary. She may have more information about both of them that may help.

I would say though that I think there are two daughters, both called Mary (not surprising given their mother's name) b. 1890, one belonging to William and the other sister Jane. Both households show in 1901 in Muiravonside with daughters Mary Forrester and Mary Gray with their respective parent/households.

In respect of marriages/deaths for William, there are probably too many possibilites to check out on SP. Not sure where you live, but certainly one that would be perfect for a day trip to New Register House in Edinburgh!
