Why is it that you can enter information about a relative into ancestry or FreeBMD and it comes up with nothing.

Is there anything im doing wrong? Its happening when I search for BMD's mostly.

Hi Vasquez,

Is it 20th century BMD? If so, there's a ca. 65 year span that's not searchable - you have to view the index quarter by quarter for every year

Perhaps the records aren't included in that particular database or spelling of the name is different than what you are putting into search boxes.
If no results come up use wildcards, +/- years or very broad searching gradually narrowing down the results.
For example, you want John Smith born 1889 in Manhattan, New York, U.S. and nothing comes up.
Search for John Sm*th in case Smyth is Smyth
Search born 1889 +/- 1, then +/-2, etc.
Search born New York (rather than Manhattan) or just U.S.
Search for Sm*th (no first name), etc.

Hi Vasquez

I think sometimes you can give too much info.

On BMD if I don't make a hit I just put in the name & click phonetic surname search. Maybe I add the county if I'm positive I've got the right one.

On Ancestry Phonetic name search to get all the variations of the surname but even then it means trailing through a lot of pages.

Ok, these are ones that are getting on my nerves.  But for some reason, BMD searches seem to throw a wobbly!

Edward Harper. Born c1918 Ystradgynlais, Wales
Frederick William Harper. Born 27/05/1891 Denmark Grove, Islington
John Arthur Stevenson. Born 1885 Ilkeston, Derbyshire.

There are more, but these are the ones that are really annoying me.

Using http://freebmd.rootsweb.com :

John Arthur Stevenson SepQ 1885  Basford  7b 140
(Basford includes Ilkeston)

I typed both names, searched 1 year either side of given year and used Derbyshire for John Arthur.  

Stuck on Edward bc 1918.........

Ilkeston is in Basford registration district. Again, this pops up immediately for me ...
