Hi Vasquez

Ystalyfera is the next but one village down the valley, about one and a half miles away.

Very roughly next to each other; the parish of  Islington is to the north-west of Shoreditch.

One of my lines keep moving over the boundary ........not very helpful!

Why isnt London allocated to one county? It cant be Middlesex, Surrey etc at the same time!!!!

 It would be easier!

Very roughly the City is in the middle, around that the county of London, NE is Essex, SE is Kent, SW is Surrey, W & NW is Middlesex.

www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/Corporation/maps/london_map.htm     might help (shows the modern boroughs)

No, at one time it was Kent and Essex as well!!!  ;D

Historically, many areas that we now consider as London came under other counties; there was the City of London, which was the bits around the Tower of London, St Paul's, etc, Kent went right up to Deptford, now part of the London Borough of Lewisham, Surrey extended up to the Thames at Bermondsey, Rotherhithe and Battersea, and no doubt someone can tell you about Middlesex and Essex.

And there was countryside between the City of London and Westminster not that long ago (look at the resources bit on the London board, I'm sure there are references to old maps there somewhere).

Thanks Nanny Jan and all the other RChatters for your help on this thread  :)

Kind regards
Gaie
