Mathews/Mathias
« on: Friday 26 September 08 21:38 BST (UK) »
Looking for links with John Mathews born Carmarthenshire 1806, Wife Harriet, children John 1827, George 1933, Mary 1836, William, Elizabeth 1840.

John was a copperman living in Copperworks Barracks with family up to the 1851 census, in 1841 they were Mathews, but in 1851 they are down as Mathias. Then they all disappear and I can't find them.
Had a lead from Ancestry that a John Mathias was on the 1871 census for Canada, Welsh-born1803-4.
Could this be a possibility that they went to look for work?

Hi,

Is this the family you have in 1841 & 1851?

1841  HO107/1379/3  f.9  p.10  &  f.10  p.11  Civil Parish:  Llanedy
Llanelly
Copperworks Barracks

MATTHIAS
John        35    Copper Man    Y
Harriet     34                        N
Samuel    17                        Y
John        14                        Y
William     13                        Y
George      8                        Y
Mary         5                        Y
Elizabeth    1                       Y

MATTHIAS is hard to read looks more like MATHEW to me :-\

1851  HO107/2468  f.129  p.11  Llanelly
Copperworks Barracks

Harriet  MATHEW    Head    Wid    49    Pauper              Pembroke Hulford
George                  Son       U      16    Copperman
Mary                    Daur              14   House Servant
Elizabeth               Daur              10
Hannah                 Daur               8
James                   Son                6
Susannah              Daur               3               All children born Carmarthen Llanelly

I think Hulford could be Hwlffordd/Haverfordwest,

If this is the family then the 1851 shows Harriet as a widow.

Daisy
