West Ham 1871 Census
« on: Sunday 30 January 05 15:38 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone have access to this census please.

My Bateman family seem to have moved from Bethnal Green between the 1861 and 1871 censuses.

In 1881 some of them are at 4 White Hart Cottages - are they there in 1871?

Names and ages of the people I am looking for are:
Joseph Bateman 50 Bootmaker, Mary Ann his wife 50 and children Rosetta 20, Thomas 18 Cabinet maker, Joseph 15 Toymaker and John 13.  There could also be a very elderly John Bateman 80+ Bootmaker.

Any help much appreciated.

Hi Barbara

You don't give any further details ie. birth places etc. nor do you say who was at White Hart Cottages in 1881 so I am not sure if this is who you are looking for or not?

20 Park Road, Leyton

Mary BATEMAN wid head 50 charwoman b.Deptford, Kent
Thomas son 18 gardener b.Leytonstone

Thanks Casalguidi

In 1881 Rosetta and John were at 4 White Hart Cottages.  I am fairly certain that the parents had died by then.

Birthplaces are
Joseph City of London or Bishopsgate
Mary Ann St Lukes or Bishopsgate
All the children Bethnal Green

The Leyton family not likely to be the right one therefore.

What info is required to get the best out of the 1871 index search?

Hi Barbara

Right, here they are:

8 Princes Court, Bethnal Green (St Paul)

Mary Ann BATEMAN head wid 50 weaveress b.Bethnal Green
Rosetta dau 19 fancy box maker b.BG
Herbert son 17 cabinet carver's assistant b.BG
Joseph son 14 toy maker b.BG
John son 11 b.BG

RG10/502 folio 79 page 26

For the best searches in 1871 it is vital to have names/ages/birthplaces.  Occupations and addresses also to help decide if they are the correct family once you have found a likely candidate.  These were indexed as BATEVANS.

Best wishes

Casalguidi

This is brilliant - thank you so much.

I now know when to look for Joseph's death and can make some more progress.
