Missing in 1891 - SCOTT, Byker, Newcastle
« on: Tuesday 30 September 08 11:50 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

Can anyone help me find my great grandfather, Walter SCOTT and his father, Robert SCOTT in the 1891 census. I have searched every way that I can think of (first name only, date of birth, place of birth) without success.

I have found them in 1881 at 106 Corbridge Street, Byker, Newcastle upon Tyne (RG11/5068 Folio 40)
Robert Scott, Head, Mar, 45, Boilermaker, born Berwick on Tweed
Isabella Scott, Wife, Mar, 44, born Gateshead Durham
James Scott, Son, Unmar, 25, Boilermaker, born Newcastle
Robert Scott, Son, Unmar, 22 Boilermaker, born Newcastle
Margaret A. Scott, Dau, Unmar, 24, Servant Domestic, born Newcastle
Walter Scott, Son, Unmar, 18, Boilermaker, born Newcastle
Thomas W. Scott, son, 14, born Stockton on Tees, Yorks.
George Scott, son, 12, born Stockton on Tees, Yorks.
Ann Scott, Dau, 11, Scholar, born Newcastle
Joseph Ward, Boarder, Unmar, 24, Boilermaker, born Newcastle.

According to the marriage certificate of Walter SCOTT on 2 April 1892, he was resident at 123 Corbridge Street, Byker.

Robert SCOTT died on 28 September 1897 at 8 Raby Street, Byker aged 61 years.

I have searched the whole of Corbridge Street and Raby Street in 1891 but they are not in either street. There is a possibility that one of the sons (Robert) is at 80 Corbridge street, but I am not certain if it is him.

GG Grandfather Robert SCOTT was born abt 1836 in Ancroft/Scremerston/Berwick.
He married 1) Ann KENNEDYat Newcastle Register Office on 18 Feb 1856. 2) Isabella SCOTT nee TURPIN (his brother's widow) at Newcastle Register Office on 28 December 1874.
G Grandfather Walter SCOTT was born 23 November 1862 at 49 George Street, Westgate, Newcastle. He married Mary Elizabeth SIMM at Newcastle Register Office on 2 April 1892.

It may be that Walter was still living at home in 1891 and the whole family were ommitted from the census, but I would be grateful if anyone else can help try and find them if they are there!

Regards,
Kevin Scott

Hi Cathy,

Thank you so much - that is brilliant. You have made my day  ;D

I could not find them on Ancestry but will now see whether I can find Headlam Street.

Please excuse my ignorance but what is FindMyPast? It sounds very useful!

Best wishes,
Kevin

Hi,
Glad to have helped, the census entry can be found on www.findmypast.com.
I have a subscription but i think you can pay and go or possibly do a basic search for free.
Sometimes Ancestry misses a page or two, i have found things on FindMyPast before that have nt been on ancestry.
Just noticed your username, we obviousy have an affinity with the number 151!
 Best wishes

Hi Cathy,

Thanks for the link.
I checked Ancestry for Hedlam Street and the relevant page is missing on their site. No wonder I could not find them in any search of their indexes!

Thankyou for taking time and your credits to search for this fellow 151'er!!

Best wishes,
Kevin

Hi there. I have just come across your very old post. I have a family connection to Walter Scott but not sure how just passed down stories that he is a distant relative. I have a picture of a stained glass window in Newcastle in memory of his wife Ann and his parents Sam and Mary. It says wails and strang Newcastle upon Tyne 1891. The picture looks hand painted. Would love to hear. We are related to J W Guild of Glasgow incase that is useful.
