Fanny = Frances???
« on: Tuesday 30 September 08 18:42 BST (UK) »
Am i right in thinking that Fanny will be short for Frances?

Got a Fanny on the marriage certificate to Stephen, but then on their prospective childrens births on the parish register it says Stephen and Frances. Would the 2 be interchangeable?

Hi Ebor

In my experience I have usually found that Fanny was a shortened version of Frances, or at least in my family tree.

My great grandmother was registered as Frances, baptised as Fanny, married as Frances, and on childrens' certificates the name she used sometimes Fanny, sometimes Frances  ::)

I have an ancestor who was baptised as Fanny, married as Fanny and was Fanny in all the censuses.  She had a daughter called Frances Jane and the name has continued down the generations as Frances. I have never doubted that Fanny is a shortened version of Frances.

Hi

Fanny is also a name in its own right. A quick check of FreeBMD shows that in 1870 alone there were 4210 births registered with the first name Fanny.

Hi, I had a lot of trouble treating a Fanny and a Frances as the same person,later (as per census and help from this site) finding out they were sisters .Fanny was a few years older than Frances.
