Tithes list
« on: Wednesday 01 October 08 21:17 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know if the Derry Tithes list is available online. I am looking for Glover (William, George and Mary). They are all listed in 1831 but I don't know what parish.
Many thanks.

Do you mean 1831 census?

Tithe Applotment is 1828 for the following Glovers in Co. Londonderry:
Ballynacross, Maghera Parish: John
Gullyduff [Gulladuff], Maghera Parish: George, J.
Slatabogy [Slaghtybogy], Maghera Parish: George Jr., George Sr., J.
Glencarraghan [no idea what this one is supposed to be as I can't find it listed anywhere], Termoneeny Parish: William

Hi Aghadowey,
I found the information on http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/frame_1280.cfm.
I clicked on the link to search 3.6m records and the results were listed under tithes. The source date is 1831. I did not realise there was an 1831 census. I thought the earliest available census was 1841. My relations were in Kerry in 1841, they were not from Kerry so I am trying to find where they were from before that. A local historian told me that they came from 'The North' to build churches. They were all stonemasons. An 1831 census would be a great help.

Don't get too excited. Only a bit of 1831 census survives for Co. Derry. It was a sort of religious census listing head of household (and no one else by name), number of males and females, religion (Catholic, Church of Ireland, Presbyterian, other).
No idea what Irish Genealogy site is referring to but notice the range of dates under 'tithes'.

I thought the list was strange alright. I contacted the Derry Genealogical Centre but unfortunately they are closed for the forseeable future.
