Hi, you could write a book about this you really have a good imagination ,the reason I bought the death certificate was ,I thought benjamin had done something really wrong and had died in prison , didnt realise it was the workhouse ,so I suppose the secret has died with them and I will never know why or what happened ,but I will go back to the records office again and see if i can find anything out ,It did say there were records still kept from 1876 at cleveland county records office middlesborough  ,I had bought the book on paupers in the workhouses county durham and northumberland  by george bell which lists  all of the inmates who had been in the workhouse for over 5 years and why they were in but its only 1861 census ,

Hi. When my g granma, Ann Dale remarried Benjamin Taylor in 1878, there was no details of fathers name on the cert. However, could it be that he was dead ?  Benjamin showed his father as deceased and underneath are what I assumed were ditto marks. Was this just a lazy registry clerk? I would be glad if someone could find his death because I have just about given up.

Hi lynne j,  My grandmother was Jane Mabel taylor b 1889. I have info on most of the family except Walter. Do you have anything on him ie birth, marriage, death?  I notice you posted an early photo of him. Would appreciate it.

Hi lynnej,
Thanks for the info. It seems were not much closer. It is interesting that Elizabeth retained her fathers name. She was listed as a witness on Anns marriage in 1878.

Hi I dont think we are ever going to know what happened, the secret lies with them ,but Im now sure It Is our benjamin dale who died in the workhouse 1881 I know the age was out by 10 years but he gave no age when admitted so they would have guessed his age ,I am now trying to find out If walter baylass or dale born 1873 and james baylass or dale born 1876 in hartlepool stranton are reg under baylass or dale ,
