James Weatherston(e)
« on: Sunday 05 October 08 20:58 BST (UK) »
I am trying to track down my gg grandfather who was born in 1858 Wishuther, Scotland.  I got this info from when he joined the police force in Preston, Lancashire in 1882 aged 24.  His previous  job was a mason.

I would appreciate lookups in the Scottish Census Records of 1861, 1871 and possibly 1881.  Do not know at this stage how he ended up in Preston in 1882.

Any information would be greatfully received  :)

Thank you in advance

Hi dewdrop

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

The nearest that I can find  on the IGI (extracted records) is the birth of a James Weatherston in Westruther, Berwickshire:

28 July 1864 Parents - John Weatherston and Christina Fairbairn

Not sure if this is him but he might have exaggerated his age to join the police force  :-\

I'll have a further search but so far nothing else in the births.

Have you got a marriage for him that might give his father's name?

Do you have a marriage for him?

Marriage -  Preston, March q, 1883, vol 8e page 711

James Weatherston and Elizabeth Ralph on the same page

a marriage certificate is your best bet to give his father's name.

The 1901 census has him as aged 48 - thus born circa 1853

RG13/ 3947 F 32 p 12

added- on this one he is a boarder, married but stated as b. Preston . It could be that the person he was lodging with just wrote down Preston without checking.

Found this in 1881. I know he joined the Preston police in 1882, but could have transferred? :-\

Address: 49 Kirkgate, South Leith
Jane Charles, f, head, 60, lodging house keeper, b. Inverness
...
James Weatherston, m, boarder, 20, police constable, b. Coldstream

Will keep searching.

PS. And if he's the 1859 Coldstream birth sancti mentions, father was called John. It would match with first son John.

Still think the marriage cert is the only sure way,  hume. He seems to have various ages and birth places  :-\

Definitely the best idea. I've found about three possibles, none that stand out except the 1881 I found. ;D
