Ellen Byrne/Burns was born in 1869-872. I was told in Co Galway Ireland, and that spelling of her name was BYRNE. So I got her marriage certificate and couldn’t believe it when I saw surname spelt BURNS
Her Father was Patrick and her Mother Margaret Carr! So the family story runs. A cousin says that they come from Wexford, but it gets more confusing because I have now been told by her daughter, my aunt, that she was born in Galway. When I started my researches I was told that she wasn’t born in Ireland but that she was born in Liverpool. Dad was born there so I sent for his birth certificate and low and behold it was Burns as her maiden name on that too. Confused, I sent for her daughter’s certificate [my aunt now RIP] and it was spelt BYRNE. 12 children I cannot afford all those certificates, but Cousin insists that his mother told him it was Byrne.
One or two kind people have helped me hunt for her and we all come up against a brick wall. On the 1901 census the front page has the whole family, James Hoyle, her husband and all the children, and then squashed in at the bottom is my dad William, who was born 1900 that year 11months old. Patrick Byrne on the original, spelt Byron on the top copy is also squashed in the same line is a servant, which was a surprise named Annie Davella born in Wales.
On the 1891 census original Patrick spelt Burns widower, is living with his daughter Ellen Hoyle and her husband James Hoyle. I am hoping that the Margaret and her son are a sister of Ellen and grandson of Patrick; they are visiting at the time.
Ellen?? [Whatever spelling] married James Hoyle in the Parish Church in Liverpool on 9th April 1889. He was 20 yo and a mariner and Ellen was 18 yo and living according to the certificate no 243 at Hopwood? Street the Father Patrick is spelt Burns, but OH says that they have left the tail of the y off the page and that he can see it. It is not like that on the certificate I have for my Dad’s birth.
So that is all I know! I want to find Ellen’s birth to trace back my Irish roots; she had a very strong Irish accent and was a staunch Roman Catholic. However I have been told that the Parish church is protestant, so could she have converted? How could I find that out? That would be relevant because ˝ my Dads family are Catholics and the rest of the family are Protestants!
There are dozens of Ellen Byrne’s in Liverpool, also Ellen Burns! The records office in Liverpool, have been brilliant. They have looked at a lot of them for me! But cannot find no one can find her
Now I need HELP Please! I will never sort it on my own.
