*Completed* Lookup William Fulton b1799
« on: Tuesday 07 October 08 18:17 BST (UK) »
I have a William Fulton born 24 Feb 1799 in Eaglesham, Renfrewshire and  I have only managed to find him on the 1861 Census living at 22 Clarence St, Edinburgh St Cuthberts, Midlothian, Scotland working as a porter. with his wife Catherine (nee Brown) bc 1802 in Eastwood, Renfrewshire.

They Married 3rd Oct 1823 in Eaglesham and have 3 children to date

Agnes Fulton born 30 Oct 1824 in Eaglesham
Andrew Fulton born 3 Dec 1825 in Eaglesham
William Fulton born 1 Aug 1831 in Eaglesham

All the information I have on them was collated through IGI but have been unable to find them in any census apart from 1861 and because at that time they were in Midlothian that is why I have posted on this board

Thanks in anticipation of your help

Hi,
Could this be them listed as Tallon. On the 1851 census at 34 Howe St, Edinburgh, surname is "Tallon"

P.S. Having second thoughts now , only christian names, William and Catherine, and Eaglesham the same

Ian and Tom,

I looked at this puzzle a few days ago but wasn't that successful. Couldn't find them in the census so I assumed it was likely due to a transcription error, both with Ancestry (index) and SP. ???

William died 1868 in Edinburgh. When he died, he was a "street porter". I assume since you have an exact d.o.b., Ian, you know his parents? Daughter Agnes Craig* registered his death.

Catherine died 1876 in Eaglesham. William described as "salesman in oils and paints". Parents were Peter Brown, shepherd (dec.) and Agnes Brown m.s. not known (also dec.). Again, Agnes signed the death.

*Agnes mar. Andrew Craig 18th September 1853 in Eaglesham. Two children; Agnes 1855 & Margaret 1858

P.S. Quick look at FreeCen for 1841 Eaglesham shows a lot of Fultons staying at Polnoon St. Catherine died there, so likely some (or all) are related.

Thanks Tom for searching, but I do not think that is them
Thanks Hume24 for the information and it has certainly confused me.

I have them on the 1861 census which I now think is wrong because according to your information Agnes is married and living in Eaglesham according the he 1861 Census and would not be in Edinburgh.

William Fulton b1799 parents were Samuel Fulton born 1776 in Ayrshire and Margaret King 1779 in Ayrshire and they were married on the 11th of Feb 1797 in Abbey Renfrewshire. their first 3 children were born in Renfrewshire and then they had moved back to Dailly in Ayrshire by 1805 for the birth of their fourth child Robert Fulton.

From Robert on-wards all the Children were born in Ayrshire and were Cotton Hand Loom Weavers, and got most of them pegged down, But the first 3 children Bettie b1797 William b1799 and Marion b 1801 all in Renfrewshire are causing me the problems and I am beginning to think that I have wandered of track with William and getting frustrated ???

Certainly confused now. ;D Here's the details from William's death cert. All as shown:

William Fulton, street (?) porter, 69, married to Catherine Brown
d. Jul 20th 1868 at 22 Clarence St, Edinburgh
parents - Andrew Fulton, muslin weaver (dec.) and Susanah Fulton, m.s. Clark (also dec.)
cause of death - disease of liver, duration ? months
registered by A Craig, daughter, Eaglesham (present)

Using the parents' names on the IGI brings up;

William Fulton, bapt. 9th Jun 1799 Eaglesham

Hi Ian & Hume,

I think the IGI records that Ian used were all submitted records for William Fulton, they have to be treated with care and whenever possible get other proof. The record that hume24 got for William Fulton is an extracted record, so you may have to consider parents, Andrew and Susanah.

You have no other certificates to prove William's parents, according to your first post. So maybe worthwhile trying to prove with hume24's find.

Hi Tom and Hume

I think that I fell off the edge of the world  :'( I wish it was round.

Hume you have confirmed that I completely lost the trail in Renfrewshire and will have to start again as that William is certainly not related to me. (I blame my parents  ::))

William, when I eventually find him, is my 2nd great Granduncle so I will now close this topic and and get my spade out and start digging again, hopefully in the right direction. Thank you both for all your help and at least stopping me from running  too far in the wrong direction.

Kindest Regards

Ian
