Is this the only way?
« on: Wednesday 08 October 08 04:20 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
I'm still looking for the birth of James BONNIN. Somewhere between about 1775-1785. London.  (The 1841 census gives his age as 59, not born in county. I haven't seen it myself.)
I'm not even sure now he was born in England, but if not, where?
His parents were James Bonnin and Susannah Brown, married St Marylebone, 1770.
I have siblings for James;
Catherine Ann Magdelene Bonnin, Wandsworth, 1771. no source info.
Caroline Bonnin, 1777. no source info.
Samuel Bonnin, christened 12 April, 1779, Kings Weight House Fish Street Hill-Independent, London.  IGI C096981
Sarah Allen Bonnin, 17 April, 1780, Kings Weight House etc. IGI ditto.
Hannah Jane Bonnin, 1781 ditto.
Elizabeth Perkins Bonnin, 1783 ditto.
Ebenezer Bonnin, 1785 ditto.
Mary Bonnin, 1786 ditto.

I've looked through all the IGI batch numbers for Wandsworth and several other churches around that area. I can't find Kings Weight House on the Hugh Wallis site.
I started going through ALL the London Churches on his site..... but is this the only way?

Hi Leonie  :)

He mightn't have ever been christened - I've a few like this where everyone else in the family got 'done', but not the one I'm interested in (typical!)

Here's the image for your man in 1841, just for interest...do you have him in any later census?

Thanks Prue,
Unfortunately he went bankrupt in 1848, migrated to Adelaide in 1849 and died there in 1850. So no more census info.
His first wife's death and his second marriage were in 1837 and 1838 so I got those from FreeBMD.
I have no idea of what parish records are available for London, even back then there were so many people packed into a small area, and so many of my ancestors were born, married or died there.
I do know they were Huguenots, so I'm starting with all the Huguenot churches first.

This was with the photo..... sorry it took me a while... school pick up time just after I posted the picture...

This chapel on Duke Street, off Oxford Street, takes its curious name from its original foundation as a dissenters' chapel in Eastcheap, above the office for checking the weight of merchandise. The building on the present site was funded by a generous gift from the Duke of Westminster, "the largest gift to a Nonconformist cause, it is said, that has ever been made" (qtd. in Sheppard, "Duke Street Area"). Now a cathedral of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in England, this highly distinctive church may be unnoticed by the millions of shoppers passing along Oxford Street at the top of the road, but it is nevertheless considered a famous Mayfair landmark, and much admired.

The original congregation was largely made up of wealthy people, whose taste may have dictated the internal decoration of the church. The East window (not shown here) was by Robert Anning Bell, and other windows along Weighhouse Street, with their floral pattern, show the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement, seen elsewhere in the area.
