Think this is a poss for  John James family on the 1841 - Holderness, Yorkshire

Citadel Barracks, Hull
HO107/1231 Bk 14 Folio 2 Page 1

John Smith, 40, ? R Arty, b. Scotland  - looks like subaltern - subaltern
Elizabeth, 40, servant ? , not b. County
John James, 8, not born county
Mary Ann,  ? months, born county  - looks like 1/2 - maybe 6 months then

It's very difficult to read what it says - will have to enlarge it more

Have made amendments in purple  :)

Hmm, seems to definitely be a Malta birthplace for John. Poss. Hull for Elizabeth.

Address: Cherrytrees Hamlet, Dumfries
John J Smith, m, head, 27, attendant C.R. inst (?), b. Malta (British subj.)
Isabella ", f, wife, 23, woollen weaver, b. Wigtown
Elizabeth ", f, dau., 4, -, b. Dumfries
John J ", m, son, 2, -, b. Dumfries
Janet ", f, dau., 10 months, -, b. Dumfries
Elizabeth ", f, mother, 60, head's mother, b. England

Can't see anything for Elizabeth's death. :-\

Is that the 1861?

Seems that John James's father was b. Scotland and mother England -  I'll have a look at the WO section on the Nat Archives site but ? John Smith - must be millions   ::) :( :-X

Hmmm, wonder if this is John!

John Smith, dated: 21/04/1849, sergeant in the Royal Artillery, residing at Kelso

11 pages = £5 - bargain. :D Available at SP.

PS. Yes, that was 1861. Didn't make that clear. :-[

Quite a few Elizabeth Oswalds showing on the IGI b. circa 1800 - one in Sedgefield but we really need her death cert - I'll ahve a look also - maybe England - Thomas b.c. 1870 in Sedgefield!

annoying - a few deaths showing circa 1870 in the 'broad' Sedgefield area  :-\

Hi hume

I think arti should purchase that will from SP that you've found - we've done a lot with our credits and the will will give him more info - and for £5 it's , as you say, a bargain  :)

Arti - I'd' be buying it if it was my ancestor  :)

Quite a lot of avenues for you to follow, arti. Think the elder John Smith will be difficult to trace, but his will may reveal a lot of clues. Here's hoping. :D

How do I go about acquiring funds and the  exchange between euros and dollars?    Money is not the issue.   Appreciate your help. :) :) :)

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/help/index.aspx?r=551&390

This ScotlandsPeople page should help you out, esp. the "Payment process" section.

Wills are purchased differently from credits (to use on certs, etc.) but they are mentioned and explained on the same page.
