Hi Gladys,
What a toil this has been and I hope now that this is your family  ???

I searched all sorts of variants and then went to 1861 to find Robert born 1830 Percy Main with a family. He is a widower.

Then fron that have gone forward to 1871

There is marriage on Free BMD for the couple - 1869 so Johnstone and James are Elizabeth's sons.
I can give you Robert's 1861 and look for Elisabeth too- depending on which is the ancestor. ;)

Elizabeth is "with" Robert on Census 1861 .

She is enumerated as the "household" after his .

3851-16-13 for him, 3851-16-14 for her ( written as EMARY)

They are New Delaval Colliery ( now right at top of Plessey Road ( just over the Newsham Railway Gates ( if they're still their ? )

She is recorded as "wife" "Married" and " housekeeper

Gladys,
You already know I can bore for England on "places"

Well here goes again.

Those that transcribed/indexed censuses sometimes recorded places on a " broad brush" approach.

The Barrass/Emery gang on Census 1871 are transcribed as at Cowpen.

Well they were not at Cowpen as in "Cowpen Village"

They were at what modern-ish folk would call  Bebside Furnace, down on the south bank of the River Blyth. Sometimes referred to on censuses as Bedlington Ironworks ( which had works and houses on both the Bedlington and Bebside side of the river.

But this area did lie in the wide territory of Cowpen "Township", sub-division of Horton Parish.

Heywood,

I never bothered with that bit... but I now have looked

On Census 1881 ( 5093-82-51) -family moved again.. they sure liked to "flit"- into Horton "township area, near todays "Three Horse Shoes".

For Johns* , census enumerator wrote "BEBSIDE" for "where born". ( but not in his best writing)  Modern transciber wrote it as whatever .

Hello Heywood,   that is my family i am looking for so can you get the 1861/51/41 please if you can.  I did get other census sent for Robert born 1859 but his parents were Robert & Hannah Barras then in 1881 census Robert & Hannah Barras still had a son Robert aged 22 and my Robert Barras was in the 1881 census with his wife Rebecca and family so that Robert and Hannah couldn`t have been mine.  So it looks like the 1871 census you have sent is the one i am looking for. What do you think.   Sorry i am putting you through a lot of work.

Hi Michael you do know your way round Blyth which is nice to know what you have sent.  I don`t know half the places only where i am now  ;D.

Thanks Heywood your a star and thank you Michael.  Regards Gladys  :)
