Advice Please
« on: Saturday 11 October 08 22:12 BST (UK) »
My Gx3 Grandfather Nicholas Carroll was, according to his Irish Constabulary record,  born on 8 Jan 1802 in Tipperary. He joined the Constabulary on his birthday in 1824 and all his postings were in Tipperary SR (apart from 1835-1837 when he was in Cork East). He married in 1830, wife was a native of Tipperary and  he was pensioned in 1851 whilst in Tipperary SR.

Can anyone on the board advise me please on how to go about  tracing either his birth or marriage considering I only have the above details?

I am waiting to hear from Kew  if they have any records on Nicholas and have searched online anything  to do with Tipperary to no avail--this included IFHF.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Further information on Nicholas Carroll.

After retirement from RIC, Nicholas was Postmaster in Ballyporeen, Clogheen until his death in April 1875 , a son John (the informant of death) continued as postmaster. To date, have 3 sons for Nicholas -Thomas, William and now John-possibly a Patrick also.

Familiar to anyone?

...

RIC regulations would usually have prevented Nicholas from serving in his county of birth, or county where his wife was born - so I'm not sure how he got around that. Unless Tipperary North and South Ridings were treated as separate counties by RIC regs. ?

Thanks for the reply Shane. Perhaps Nicholas was just lucky!. His son Thomas also managed to serve all of his time in Tipperary SR, Patrick in Wexford and William in Kilkenny.

It might mean that it's better to focus on Tipperary North Riding for his marriage and baptism... although 1802 is before the start of most of the RC records for that area. Even 1830 (i.e. the marriage), could be a little early...

Thanks Shane,

I have contacted both N&S  Tipperary Heritage Centres for birth and marriage records to no avail. What I do have on Nicholas' marriage came from his RIC records and surprisingly his wife's  name was recorded on one of the son's marriage records which was a huge bonus.
