The marriage certificate would be the next step - should show his age, his father's name and occupation, where he was living, and witness names (maybe relatives?), etc.

Yan could have been the pet form of Yankel which is the Yiddish form of the Hebrew name Ya'acov, i.e. Jacob.

To have become naturalized John/Yan would have had to have been resident in the UK for the 8 years (I think) prior to applying.

The London Gazette gives the address of Joseph Clumpus, who became naturalized on 20 Jan 1912, as 25 St. Vincent Street, Liverpool.

LG of1948 records the granting of a certificate of naturalization to Jacob Joseph Clumpus (known as Joseph Clumpus); Russian, a tailor's machiner from the above address.

There is a record at the NA from the same year for a J Clumpus born June 1888.

You said he was 21 when he arrived here, but what year was that. When was he born?

There were one (or two) Clumpus families in Liverpool for the 1901 census.

Jumping ahead (or backwards) on your genealogical voyage, I can tell you that the surnames:

Klompus, Klumpus, Klompis

were recorded amongst the Jewish families living in what is now Latvia and Lithuania.

Nothing similar was recorded any further south.

I don't know if this is your fellow, but there is this naturalisation record:-

Nationality and Naturalisation: Clumpus, Joseph, from Russia. Resident in Liverpool. Certificate 21583 issued 17 January 1912.

1912 is the date of Naturalisation not the date of arrival in U.K.

Hi there, I am looking to trace my Jewish roots in Liverpool. My great grandmother was callled Helen Brownbill, married in 1911 in west derby and I think she born around 1889.

Do you know if any of the Brownbills you mention are relatives and were the Brownbills a Jewish family?

Was Alice Brownbill Jewish as she married Joseph Jacob clumpus?
Thanks

In the London Gazette 2nd Feb 1912, page 817 - gives address as 25 St Vincent Street, Liverpool.

I've seen an image of a naturalisation certificate of that date online - it includes date and place of birth, and names of parents. So it seems likely to be worth ordering a copy of the certificate from the National Archives, or getting a researcher (or volunteer) to check it for you.
