If what you suggest is right then it becomes tidier but I am sticking on where was Ellen and George in 1891 / 1901 to find them then would tie this up nicely - there's optimism for you. I cant find any record of his departure for Canada yet either and I am gonna have to get tea soon !!!!!!!

Ellen was found for you in 1891.

I notice that James and Elizabeth Kensett had a daughter Ellen who in 1881 was in service in Wimbledon aged 15 (birthplace "Penge, Surrey": RG11/829/58/16) and in 1891 was with her family, still in Wimbledon, aged 24 ("laundress", birthplace Sydenham, Kent: RG12/607/86/56).

However, he may not always have been Canadian.

A George J Kensett, laborer, 27, b London England tried to cross the border from Canada to the US at Niagara Falls on 12/11/1914 (his card is marked "Debarred" and endorsed with something I can't read about "Alien").

He appears from the same record to have arrived in Quebec on the S/S America on 7/14/1913 and last address was in Ontario.

Anna :)

http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/passenger/index-e.html

Doesn't have a vessel named AMERICA ariving in Quebec. However, the AUSONIA arrived on 14th July 1913.

These aren't searchable by name, but at least passengers are in alphabetical order.   On page 22 of the list is possibly (it's very faint) a George Kensett
age 25, an English farm labourer headed for Orangeville, Ontario.

Ah - Galium: now that I re-read the border crossing record with the benefit of your input I see that the ship's name was indeed AUSONIA rather than AMERICA.

George's last address in Canada on that record I can now discern as Queenston, Ont., for what that's worth.

Can you clarify for me please where the Ausonia was going to /from and depending on that where George was debarred from entry.  If he was debarred then does that not mean he must have been initially barred then on being de barred - allowed? I am trying to get my head round this as It would be good to see / determine if he was in Canada 1st then tried for USA or the other way round?

The Ausonia sailed from Southampton, 29 May 1913, arriving Quebec 14 July 1913.

If your chap was on that ship then it appears he stayed in Canada for a year and a bit, before attempting to cross the border to the U.S. at Niagara Falls in December 1914.  It was at this stage that he stated that his original entry to Canada had been on the Ausonia, 14 July 1913.  He was apparently debarred (prevented) from entering the U.S. by virtue of his being an alien.  A number of other people are shown as "debarred" in the same border-crossing manifest.

Debarred does not mean the opposite of barred ;)  It just means excluded/forbidden entry etc, depending on the context.
