David Davis and Sarah Moses from Spitalfields
« on: Monday 13 October 08 15:47 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I'm trying to find some more information on David Davis and Sarah Moses, who were married in the Great Synagogue, London, on Feb 5 1806.

David Davis was listed on the marriage as the son of "Jacob Irishman", and Sarah Moses was listed as daughter of "Schwartz Aharon"

I believe Sarah Moses had a sister Rebecca and a brother Emanuel.

I would love to hear from anyone who is researching these families, or if anyone can advise me on how to find out some more information, that would be great.

Appreciate any help!

Thanks,
Anne

Hello Anne

The Church of Latter Day Saints has produced this document

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/docs/Jewish_Genealogy_Research_08_2008.pdf

I admit I haven't read its 61 pages so don't know how much relevance to your research there will be.

Anne,

You are very fortunate to have such an early Jewish record. However did you find it?

I think you should probably make enquiries at or even join the London-based Jewish Genealogical Society of Great Britain.

http://www.jgsgb.org.uk/index.shtml

In my experience the other main Jewish genealogical forum - JewishGen - is not really much use for researching early British Jewry. Unfortunately, the site is down at the moment otherwise I would do a few searches for you.

Justin

Dawn, thanks for that link.  I will have a look at it and see if it has any more tips for me.

Justin,
Fortunately for me, they had a son, Henry Davis, who moved to Scotland so it was easier to trace back from the Scottish records. For the marriage of Sarah and David I am relying on the transcripts for the Great Synagogue marriages so far, but this is new ground for me, so I'm not quite sure where to go from here.  Thanks for the link - I will certainly check it out.  Thanks also for the offer to do a few searches - I would really appreciate that!

Cheers,
Anne

Hello Anne,

When was Henry born, and where and when did he die?

There were a several men named David Davis in London at the time. No obvious link yet.

Justin

Hi Justin,
I don't have Henry's birth yet.  All I have for him are the census returns from 1851 to 1881 in Scotland, where he lists his birthplace as London.  I also have him in the 1891 census, back in London, where he lists his birthplace as Spitalfields.

I also have his second marriage in 1866 to Isabella McAllister, where his parents are listed as David Davis (shipping agent) and Sarah Moses, both deceased.  Henry is listed as being 45 on this certificate.

On the census returns he is listed as being an auctioneer, or a furniture dealer.

I don't have his death certificate yet either.

Hope this helps, I know its probably not a lot to go on.

Thanks for your help.
Anne

Hello Anne,

I couldn't find any shipping agents named David Davis. But I'm sure that slightly unusual occupation will help you.

If the David and Sarah who wed in 1806 really are the right parents, then Henry must have been the youngest of a large family. This was quite commonplace.

There are a lot of people on JewishGen researching Davis families from London, but very few postings.

I think the JGSGB is going to be your best bet.

You could also try www.british-jewry.org.uk

Angela Shire, who transcribed the GS records, was one of the founders.

Good luck, Justin
