Thank you for your comments. No, he definitely wasn't a refugee - my impression is that the family was fairly well off, and the three sisters all "married well" - Maria's husband - Hans Margulies - was a journalist and  Mathilde's husband - Viktor Stein - later became president of the Finanzprokuratur in Vienna.

Just thought some of these observations and ideas in a historical and geographical context might be useful.

Very true.  So much of what we research is just the bare facts of places and dates on various "official" bits of paper, so anything over and above this is very useful.

Thanks again for the information, and a special thanks to your wife, for her thoughts and translations - that is all new information for me.
