Parrishes of Chirk
« on: Friday 17 October 08 14:47 BST (UK) »
I'm new to this and it's my first post - so hope I'm doing it right!

I saw a topic about Collinses of Chirk and noticed that someone called Gadget had lots of info and a very interesting website including the Parrishes, which is the line I'm looking for.

I wondered (perphaps I'm being cheeky but here goes) whether Gadget had any further info about the Parrish line headed up by William and Mary - names and dates of their children is what I'm looking for in particular.

Any help will be gratefully appreciated!

Hi again

Sorry about that. I was on the phone and had to type one handed  ::)

Here are the children that I have:

Children of William Parrish and Mary Hughes:

Thomas b. 22 June 1790 - 1860 (m. Ann Jones)  - my line
Mary b. 25 June 1793 - died before 1795
Mary b. 19 Jan 1795  (m. Thomas Collins)
Elizabeth b. 21 Nov 1796-1802
James b. 7 May 1798 - <1841

all b. Chirk

Note - they seemed to vary their surname between Parrish and Parish

Thank you for that.  Do you know where John Parrish belongs (he married Ann Mary Jones in 1814, witnesses included Thomas Collins and Mary Parrish)?

John was my GGGG grandfather (if I've counted right!).

I had found John's marriage record in Parish Registers, and also the baptism of his daughter Pamela (my GGG grandmother), but couldn't seem to find much else!

Hi again  :)

I think he was the son of one of William's brothers - I'll have to check up on my records again and get back to you.

My notes show that your Mary Jones was 'of the parish of Whittington' when she married John in 1814 (with consent of parents).  I also have a note to say 'check St Martins records'. This,  as you probably know, is the parish to the south of Chirk and to the north of Whittington.

When and where was Pamela born?

Hi again Rose

The Chirk records have the following baptisms of children of John and mary:

24 Dec 1815, Eliza d/o John (collier) and Mary. Living at the Wharfe

11 October 1818, Pamel d/o John(collier) and Mary. Living in Chirk village.

Most of the Parishes lived in the Black Park/Halton area of Chirk, so your family are unusual in this respect.

There are no other bpts in the Chirk records for this couple - either they moved away or John or Mary died or they converted to Methodism as many of the Parishes did at around this time.

I don't see John and Mary on the 1841 census in Chirk. John and Elizabeth, who I mentioned earlier,  are there. There is an outside chance that this is the same John (and  maybe married Elizabeth Roberts as a second marriage) but he would have only been 15 when he married Mary if this was the case.

Do you have Pamela on any of the censuses?

Hi Gadget, thank you for all your useful stuff.

Sorry I'm so bad at getting back - I only manage to go on the computer now and then so I'm a bit hit and miss!

It's all very odd then - my John Parrish doesn't seem to be the son of any of the three brothers.  Wonder whose he was?  As you say, it seems doubtful he would have married Mary at age 15 to make Elizabeth a second wife, but I suppose stranger things have happened.

You have the right Pamela - she was born in Chirk (and states that on censuses after 1841), but in1841 she was married to my ancestor, George Edwards, and was living in Bagillt.  Interestingly, next door to them on the census is one James Parish and wife Ann, aged 30 (1841 census so no place of birth given).  A cursory glance at the 1841 census doesn't seem to show a John and Mary Parrish in Bagillt however.

Pamela married George Edwards in 1839, and she died in 1858 in Bagillt.

So old John's a bit of a mystery man then!
