Accident in Hunsdon
« on: Friday 17 October 08 14:52 BST (UK) »
I have very recently discovered the dramatic death of our George Coleman, a builder/carpenter mostly living in Ockley Surrey, who currently was living in Hunsdon, he was killed by the accidental bursting of a gun (sounds nasty) there and  he was buried there about 18th Feb 1849, death was 14th Feb and there was obviously an inquest as the informer was the coroner. I believe chances of finding the coroner's records are slim but it must surely have made the papers. Can anyone tell me what was the likely local paper and where could it be found, apart from Collindale.

Hi,

The local record office (Hertfordshire in this instance) usually has old newspapers; often on microfilm.  They should be able to advise on the likely paper and if they have copies.

Don't give up on the coroner's records;  I found one for 1902 and another Rootschatter found one for 1838.  :D

Where does Collindale fit in?

As nannyjan has pointed out the Hertfordshire Archives will hold any surviving newpapers and possibly Herts coroners reports.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will have a go and see if the Herts Record Office can help, Collindale is the British Library Newspaper library and used to be at Collindale Avenue in London but I have a vague feeling it has moved.
