Henry Baldwin marriage
« on: Friday 17 October 08 17:29 BST (UK) »
Hi ,I'm looking for the marriage/name of father of Henry Baldwin b 1823 in England in census extract below. He seems to drop off the census in England and can find no English marriage record for him.
I found this possible family which might be him in the U.S 1880 census. It shows that they were in Canada for sometime and may have married there I suspect. The fact that they are in Michigan  later lends weight to my theory that it is my missing bunch, as one of Henry's brother's children emmigrated to Michigan area c 1868.
His fathers name should be Anthony if it is correct one.
many thanks in advance,
Gazza

Hi Gazza,

Sorry to say but all the records you are looking for are prior to general registration.  The only things I could add is that the family lived in Michigan in 1870 also:

Henry Baldwin 50
Jane Baldwin 40
Margaret Baldwin 20
John Baldwin 18
Henry Baldwin 16
Thomas Baldwin 14
William Baldwin 10
Ann Baldwin 8
George Baldwin 6
Maria Baldwin 4
Eward Baldwin 2
John McPherson 26
James Neal 25

All the children were born in Canada except for Edward.  Birth registration started in Canada in 1869 and Marriages in 1857.

Here is the birth of Edward from the IGI:

Edward Baldwin - Male
 Birth:  30 JUN 1867   , Alcona, Michigan
Parents:
  Father:  Henry Baldwin
  Mother:  Jane Baldwin
---------------------------------------------
Source Information: Batch No.:  C518182

Hope that helps in some way,

Nancy

Thanks for your time and help Nancy. I didn't realise that about the Canadian records. Bit of a blow that.
Would there have been some kind of ships passenger list in those times?
Were there the equivalent of parish records that might show their marriage?

regards

gazza

Sorry to say, the census does not contain relationship data.  The two were both born in Canada.  Probably working on the farm with John Baldwin?  I can't seen to be able to read the occupation?

Correction:  In the 1870 census it states that Maria was born in Michigan.

From what I can see in the 1870 & 1880 census, the family lived in English Canada.  This would probably mean Ontario but that is only a guess.  Ontario was considered "Upper Canada" and Quebec was "Lower Canada".  Quebec being French speaking and would be listed as Canada-French in the census.  This does not mean that they didn't live in the maritimes or the western provinces.

Although Ontario is a guess, it is just across the border from Michigan.  This would not require a ship if your question about passenger lists was for this time period.

I tried to trace the children and found a few Baldwins still living in Williams, Bay, Michigan.  If they are decendants of Henry and Jane, the immigration year was listed as 1863.  This somewhat fits that Maria and Edward were born in Michigan.

As for the parish registers, you first need to find out where they lived in Canada.  It is a very large country and you are looking for a needle in a haystack I'm afraid.  Your best move next would be to contact someone in Michigan that may be able to find some data for you in the archives about Henry and Jane.

I hope that helps in some way,

Nancy

Thanks Nancy for the info you have kindly found for me.
The shipping records I meant was for Henry from England to Canada just to be clear. There were alot of shoemakers in the family that Henry came from in England ,so could be on the right track.
Jane /june is very confusing saying boen in Ireland one time then England another.( and all keep changing their birth year. Amazing we can find anybody at all  :o :)

Regards
Gazza
