Hi
Can anyone help me with the name COMER in Polish. Would Comer be a Polish surname?? if not what could it translate back to??

Since posting originally I now have some other info which I will place here:-
Ellis Comer = Eli son of Yechiel Mikal
Hannah  Enna or Anna Sander  = Channa Sarah dau of Tzvi/Tsebi
married 5th July 1854
Komer or Komar is Polish for gnat or mosquito and is a translation of the Yiddish word MUK which was a  shortened pet form for the name Yechiel Mikal !!!

I have checked with the National Archvies web page for any of these names in relation to Naturalisation Documents, nothing found.
I have also found that Jewish folk did not have surnames until early 1800's when Countries decided that all Jewish folk had to have surnames particularly for Tax reasons. Each person would have been known eg., Eli son of Yechiel Mikal and so on. But it transpires that families did not take one family surname, instead they decided to each choose different ones, again to avoid be tracked for Taxes!! I believe Yechiel Mikal are both Forenames and no surname, could translate to Charles Michael.

Yechiel Mikal is now Isaac Comer.
Tzvi/Tsebi is now Michael Sanders

Here is a web link for marriages from 1851 -1859 Great Synagogue by Angela Shire, London, 2006
http://www.british-jewry.org.uk/New%20Member%20Area/Angela%20Shire/GSM%201851-59%20corrected.pdf
The marriage for Ellis Comer is listed. The name Yechiel Mikal does appear again on this list as does Mikal and Mikel and Yechiel Mikel HaCohen. It could be possible that all these surnames belong to one person ??

Isaac Comer was the father of Elles Comer. Elles came to Britain, living Middlesex, Whitechapel areas all his life. He married 1854 to Enna or Anna Sanders, she the dau of Michael Sanders - Tailor - all Jewish. Married Great Synagogue in Chambers by the famous Rabbi Nathan Alders. Details state the fathers names, but not sure if Isaac was present, not found on any census returns, he was noted as a Doctor, not sure if he was a Physician or other.
Addresses at time of marriage Elles became Ellis later, 101 Lomas St, Whitechapel, London
Enna/Anna 83 Chamber St, Whitechapel.
Ellis became Naturlised by 1891 census along with his wife. All their 17 children were born in London area.

I have this Comer family info and much more as Abraham Comer on Middlesex Lookup(*).
Here is the weblink for the Polish Genforum that I have posted on as well for this same family.

Many thanks to both of you.
Tell me, where and how does one find this information??

The Russia bit, now if I am correct and I do stand to be corrected, but when  Russia took over Poland initially, residents of Poland were Polish or Russian-Polen, but some time later they were made to only use Russia, so these two could be from the Russian part of Poland. I think the Russian area stretched from the east to the west along the top of Poland, taking in 3/4 areas of Poland, I don't have the notes I made as I have passed them onto my friend without making a copy.

Strange how "Comer" is not a Polish name yet others have come from an area close to Poland and got Naturalisation in Britain. If they are all related it could be they have all adopted this surname.
My friend has said that the pronunciation of Comer is as follows and he translates it in this way.

KU-MAR  NOT CO-MER

Now one could say they were Kumar, Komar, Kommer etc., which would fit in with the Polish names.

Another friend has said that Polish folk came through Holland and France to settle in England and USA. There was a LARGE community of Jewish folk living in Holland as "Dutch Jews".
As Elles/Ellis Comer was married in the Great Synagogue, London, he would have been of the ASHKENAZI Jewish Faith meaning Dutch or Deutsch.

Regards
Wendy

Hi Svenja
Many thanks for the good info. Found the dutch/jewry site fantastic and the name Comer comes up as Kromme then chaned to Comer, perhaps this could be the same family. No other Cromer has come up on any other websites.
